This would not have been my normal choice of book to read, but I’m glad I picked it up. It definitely deals with some important issues that I think young people would love to discuss, but there were a few things that I wish were done differently. Overall, I think some people will enjoy it, and others will find it annoying, but that’s most books, so a solid 3 for me

A great ending to the trilogy! The multiple points of cite were a bit disorienting at first, but I got used to it by the midpoint. I really loved the focus on magic, ancestral ties, intergenerational trauma, chosen and bio family. Just so great. I will read anything this author writes.

I loved this book when I was in high school, and after rereading, I’m thinking that I loved it because I wanted scifi in the English classroom sooo badly I’d accept just about anything. Tbh, it bored the hell out of me this time around, and the boredom was the good part. The racism, ethnocentrism, and ableism were a lot. I’m sure it went over my head as a teen because I didn’t read it deeply, but this time? I read every word, and I’m upset I did. So far, that’s 2 for 2 of ruining my high school faves (there were only 3 - all scifi). 2.5/5 for me this go round.

I loved so so much about this book. The superheroes, the conversations about trans identity, friends, power, and family (chosen and not). It’s also an action-packed story that kept my attention from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read book 2!

I wanted to like it more than I did. The premise was intriguing, but I found the story to be a bit boring. For most of the book, the MC is wandering around on a secluded island. It’s cool for a while, but it became kind of repetitive. It was a quick read, though, which I love. I wish more books were 200-250 pages.

I think I’m so used to magical stories in which there’s some adventure, too, so I think my rating is based on that. I live for adventure stories, but that’s not really what this is. And, that’s ok. I think some people will love it.
