3.5 stars- not 3.
I enjoyed the overall story of the book- it was really interesting! I didn’t enjoy how abruptly certain things happened and how randomly angry our main character got, this really took away from my overall enjoyment hence the not quite 4 star rating.

I know it’s fantasy/ fantasy romance but let’s kill someone please and not bring them back from the dead? I would have liked less predictability but then need to remember the genre I’m reading (fantasy romance). Still- very enjoyable and I’m keen to read the final book!

First time reading it- received a review collectors editions and loved it. Full review to come

I should preface this and say that while this book came out in 2014, I’m sad it has taken me so long to get to because it was incredible- I also haven’t really seen it on my side of booktok and therefore went in blind! The plot itself was so well crafted, with characters that weren’t entirely loveable but still drew the reader in straight from the get go. I enjoyed the style of prose, it was really nice to step outside of the realm that which I usually read in. The ending was what really hit home for me, I did not see it coming, and my heart!! It dealt with some pretty heavy stuff so depending on the age of the reader, given that it is a YA book, I highly recommend this to mature YA readers and naturally to all us adults who love a good YA book! Also, I should acknowledge my mum, she told me to read this awhile back (she used to work in a high school library) and naturally I didn’t listen to her- one day I will mum

After absolutely loving book one I was so excited when this dropped into my KU reads. I was so disappointed with book two, unlike the first book, this one felt like every basic bitch fantasy romance series out there. I’m hoping book three is more like book one because I enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns of book one, whereas this one was predictable as anything and she didn’t hate him (I wish the author didn’t make her say it every second page) because they have sex every two seconds and not in an enemies to lovers or hot angry sex way, it was all a bit boring.

I really enjoyed Kokomo, the authors’ debut novel, but I absolutely loved Marshmallow. Similar to Kokomo, Hannan explores powerful adult friendships, trauma, and love in Marshmallow, but in a more harrowing way. This book is certainly not for the faint hearted as it does deal with a pretty heavy overarching storyline. With that being said there were equal moments of sadness and happiness throughout the story. There were some cutesy references to the Neverending Story, Mario Kart on the Nintendo 64 and a few other things that made me smile. I was really drawn to each character, and how they navigated through their grief, as well as how they maintained their strong friendships. This book made me ugly cry so much, and I am still not able to form proper words to articulate just how much I enjoyed this book. If you’re after a good character driven book to gift to yourself or loved one for Xmas, I highly recommend this book by Australian author, Victoria Hannan. It is a sad book (not a sad girl book) and could be triggering for some (feel free to DM me), but it is truly beautiful! ⁣
