this just fell flat for me. i remember really liking the mother-in-law, but this book was just so straightforward and predictable.

i flew through this book because it was interesting and well-paced, but i found it simply lacked depth. i kept waiting for the twist, but it never really came. the plot was pretty obvious to me from about 1/3 in. i wanted to know more about some characters that were crucial to the denouement. others felt suspiciously too good to be true, and that was never challenged. 

i felt like i had read this story in big little lies: a group of women living in australia find their lives entangled and start uncovering secrets because—surprise—one of the men in their lives is secretly a monster. except BLL was much more layered and exciting and, well, deep…

this was a very strange book. i think i liked it, in that it kept me hooked, but there were a lot of new things to learn about this world to keep up with the plot. sometimes it felt like a little too much to keep the plot together. excited for the sequel, though!
