I liked it overall, was a bit confused in the beginning, I did not like the part about slavery…

I loved the surrealist elements and the commentary on good and evil, love and hope and the absurdity of Soviet society. It’s a very important lesson to know not to take things too seriously while still acknowledging suffering. However, I will be honest and say I got bored with the Pontius Pilate plot and didn’t really care for it.

This is the longest book that I have read to date but I really enjoyed the journey of it. I found it to be very funny (the humour is very reminiscent of Jane Austen) but also interesting, definitely something that has to be reread to truly understand completely. I wish we saw more of Childermass as he was my favourite. I can see myself rereading this in the future as a comfort read as it’s not too heavy but it really engulfs you in the story and there is so much to discover and ponder on.

I knew next to nothing about this book going in but reading this was perfectly timed in my life. I recently wrote a piece about ambition and falling into obscurity. I certainly did not expect to relate the characters as much as I did, whilst still hating them and constantly being annoyed at their behaviour. A very interesting read, often reflecting my own beliefs on certain things, particularly marriage, and quite shocked me at some points.

Some of the lines were very beautiful or funny, however, for the most part I wasn’t very interested.

There was some beautiful lines but it was so slow, especially in the middle. Barely anything happened the entire book, which can sometimes work for a book, however in my opinion, it did not work for this one. The characters were extremely flat and I wasn’t very invested in their stories. I think the author is very talented but needs to work on the storytelling.
