Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory
3.0
A classically sweet romance from Jasmine Guillory, but this time with a political angle. While I felt the miscommunication/closed off female protagonist for not much reason was a little cliche, I loved the angle about public vs private life and how Olivia approached her relationship with this in mind. I always read Guillory's books super quickly and they're a real comfort.
Love That Story by Jonathan Van Ness
4.0
Van Ness does a deep dive into some contemporary social issues whilst blending stories from their own life. This is definitely a de-tour from 'Over The Top', but certainly not an unwelcome one. The book does include mentions of animal death, HIV/AIDS, transphobia, mentions of drug use and casual sex - for anyone who is planning to pick it up.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel
4.0
A real thinker of a book - it's not the kind of one you can 'check-out' while you're reading, but Mandel has grabbed another pandemic novel and turned it into something kind of magic. Naomi Aldermann is quoted on the front as calling it 'comforting' and even with the slightly horrific nature of the plot - it is oddly comforting. Elegant, slow and like being wrapped in an intellectual blanket.
Parsnips, Buttered by Joe Lycett
4.0
I love Joe Lycett. The audiobook is hands down the best way to consume this book. If you loved 'Joe Lycett's Got Your Back', this is simply a loving extension of the show - and with plenty of glorious drawings and punny jokes to go along with it.
Nora Ephron: A Life by Kristin Marguerite Doidge
4.0
An insightful, if not a little short, insight into the incredible life of Nora Ephron and her work. BRB, putting in my pre-order for the new edition of 'The Most of Nora Ephron'.
Under One Roof by Ali Hazelwood
3.0
Fun, if a little bit discombobulated. I think it needed more time to sit and stew so the story could develop - but obviously, it's a novella, you're never going to get that. The sudden smut was a lot - kind of wish it had come a bit earlier tbf - and Liam was giving big 'man written by woman' vibes that veered into fanfiction territory REAL FAST. The sex scenes in The Love Hypothesis was really good - these were borderline fantastical. Also girl. It's the 21st century. Give yourself an orgasm. You don't need a man for that.
