These kind of character focused stories just don’t engulf me. It was OK.

Needed more suspense! There wasn’t enough time with seeing the villains be villainous and not enough back story to follow the characters’ relationships with much feeling.

I found the romance flat. They had some tropes but didn’t use them at all. Was it trying to be a fake dating/courting? Was it trying to be enemies to lovers? I don’t need these tropes but it was washed out this way. But I did  like that they had the one horse trope but it played out unexpectedly.

If you’ve had braiding sweetgrass on your shelf for years but haven’t managed to read it yet, this might be a perfect teaser/gateway for you.

This is a book snack. It is short and concise. As reflective as her previous works but less poetic than braiding sweetgrass.

Loved the audio and will likely revisit in print one day.

This book captured me from the start and kept me reading which is exactly what I wasnt finding in everything else I’ve been picking up lately.

Excellent debut.

The opening held promises that left me curious. I liked the pacing. I liked the level of romance. Writing style was good! Not too lyrical but descriptive.

If you like urban adventure fantasy with a sprinkle of romance and a bit of darkness, this could be for you!

Will totally read book 2!

Why not 5 stars?
There were a couple writing ticks that bugged me and some romantasy tropes (why did the gown need to show up?) but it didn’t interfere with my reading.

I saw the main plot twist coming (but not one of the side ones though). The ending felt a bit too easy. I wanted the book to lean even further into the dark themes. I needed to see more of the side characters to feel invested in them. A few times there was a specific place mentioned and it pulled me out of the reading as it made it obvious I didn’t know enough about the world.
