Ugly Rumors by Sue A. Hart

We’ve all endured them - bullies who won’t stop defaming others in order to bring themselves up in life. Liz has had enough, but she’s got a clever way to lay those rumours to rest. This was an endearing and entertaining short story about the power of forward-thinking and justice.
The Bound by Michelle Connor, Michelle Connor

The Bound is a lively tale set in medieval times with knights and dragons. The main character is realistically vulnerable yet brave. She develops a strong bond with a charismatic dragon. I love the way the author switches points of view to ensure that the main characters each get their share of action and backstory. This was a delightful novella and I'm glad there are more to come as Aveline's adventures continue.
Fate's Exchange by Sasha Leigh

Fate's exchange gives us a glimpse of heaven. The angelic Brothers and Sisters of Fate see something in Alyssa that she doesn't see in herself. The author has woven a complex web of revelations and bittersweet moments. Readers experience different points of view throughout the story, yet despite this, enough information is withheld to keep us guessing as to what heaven really has in store for young Alyssa. A very well thought-out story. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Smoky the Cowhorse by Will James

I was given this book years ago and enjoyed reading it. The story of Smoky is endearing and entertaining, though it is slow at times. I enjoyed the way the author brought the horse to life as if he were human. It felt easy to connect with Smoky as he lived out his days getting caught up in various adventures.

This is a delightful young adult story that’s infused with magic and plenty of fantastical subject matter. I like the names Rose chose for her characters – she clearly has a love for fantasy and mythology and it shines through in her writing. The story deals with themes like growing up, friendships, and the struggles of gaining power over others. I also loved watching the development of the writing as the story went on. Rose has become quite the expert at building scenes and describing characters – especially the antagonists.
