I had a hard time getting into this story. I thought it would be more middle childhood fiction but it definitely felt more elementary.
Big Nate: Blow the Roof Off! by Lincoln Peirce

Even though this wasn’t the first Big Nate book, I feel like I understood where the last book ended and where the next book will pick up. It doesn’t seem like they need to be read in any particular order. I didn’t really love the few jokes focused on people being “fat” or dumb, and I didn’t like that the story line jumped around so much. It also had almost nothing to do with his rock band like the cover suggests, and is almost entirely focused on Nate’s new relationship with Trudy.
Planet Middle School by Nikki Grimes

I liked this book -- it was a quick read about real things pre-teen girls face as they start to hit puberty. How should they dress? How should they look? How do they get boys to like them? What is it like to get your period? Nikki Grimes does a great job at incorporating all of that in one easy-to-read novel in verse.

I really enjoyed this journey with Scoob and G’ma. I docked a star for sometimes unclear writing.
Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans by Don Brown

To be honest, this book made me a little queasy. It was written really well and the pictures are simple but clear -- just like in The Unwanted. There are a lot more quotes from first-hand account interviews in this book, which I think makes it harder to swallow.
The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a long time and it definitely didn’t disappoint!! I didn’t love the fact it ended up being a dog book? But it was still excellent and has a lot of wonderful messages in it.
The Best of Iggy by Annie Barrows

Just okay. I think it would have been better to read the book than listen to the audio. It felt like it needed pictures.
Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke

This was a really interesting reinvention of the Jack and the Beanstalk story! The characters were interesting, the plot was fresh, and the drawings were very clear. I overall really enjoyed this book, and kind of want to read the next one to see what happens to Maddy!!
Binky: License to Scratch by Ashley Spires

I didn’t completely understand this book, but it turns out it’s the fifth in the series, so perhaps there are some character and setting development points that I missed out on. The pictures were mostly clear as to what was happening, but almost every single picture had a “sound effect” on it, which were just distracting. Also, the whole story was told in BOTH first person and third person, making it super confusing to read.
