The jumping in time was messy and annoying, every time the story got slightly interesting we jump back which was again annoying and unnecessary.
And our narrator interrupting the story with his commentary was distracting and — once again — annoying (and it didn’t help that I disliked him from the beginning😬).
BUT I think my first introduction to the author was strong, I read The Silent Patient last year and ate it up and gave it 5 ★. So maybe it’s my fault for having high hopes for this one?

That was a nice surprise!
I read the first book and didn’t really enjoy it, it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t really planning to read this one but I needed a quick (at work) read and remembered that I have this book in my Kindle, to my surprise it was nice and sweet but sorrowful (didn't expect it to make me tear up at work lol), I’m glad I gave it a chance <3.

Even though I didn’t enjoy the story, I loved the writing style. I can’t tell you how many times I paused to google something just so I could understand all the cultural/folklore (?) references (it was Japanese or Chinese I think, since the story is set in Japan but some of the characters are Chinese (I’m so confused)).
