Likeur en lelies by Gaby Rasters

De Bloemenstal-serie van Gaby Rasters is een heerlijke, hartverwarmende feel-good serie bestaande uit drie kortere verhalen die samen een mooi geheel vormen. De verhalen kunnen apart van elkaar gelezen worden omdat ze steeds een andere hoofdpersoon uitlichten en diens verhaal vertellen.
In het eerste deel, Mocktails en magnolia's maakten we kennis met Carmen, die vastliep in haar relatie en haar snelle beleggerscarrière. Door de bloemenstal in het Vondelpark vond ze zichzelf weer terug, een nieuw doel in het leven en nieuwe liefde.
In het tweede deel, Tequila en tulpen, leefden we mee met Anouk, de zus van Florian die we in deel 1 al hadden ontmoet. Zij krijgt te maken met de problematiek van hangjongeren en een knappe jeugdwerker die haar het hoofd op hol brengt. Een van die jongeren, Rens, en zijn alleenstaande moeder Liz, zien we nu in deel 3, Likeur en lelies, weer terug.
Liz is nu namelijk de nieuwe eigenaresse van De bloemenstal. Ze geniet hier ontzettend van maar haar zoon Rens is flink aan het puberen. Hij heeft haar nodig, dus dat zorgt voor problemen met de bloemenstal. Ze krijgt het niet rond.
De leraar van Rens, Bas, wil graag helpen. Liz wil die hulp niet aannemen, dus hij komt naar de bloemenstal toe. Dat brengt haar van haar stuk.
Het lijkt erop dat de winkel wederom mensen verbindt en voor veel liefde en geluk zorgt.
Dit derde deel is ook weer een heerlijk verhaal vol hartverwarmende momenten, waarbij het draait om vriendschap, liefde, alledaagse problemen en de groei die iemand doormaakt wanneer je met veel positiviteit en de steun van lieve mensen het geluk een kans geeft.
Likeur en lelies is op en top feel-good en leest net als beide andere delen als een trein door de fijne schrijfstijl. Het leukste is dat de vorige eigenaren nog even terugkomen, dat zorgt ervoor dat de drie delen samen toch een mooi geheel vormen, al zijn ze prima los te lezen omdat ze steeds op iemand anders focussen.

Ronke, Boo en Simi zijn drie Brits-Nigeriaanse vriendinnen die al sinds hun studietijd heel hecht zijn. We krijgen een mooie inkijk in hun leven in Londen. Dat lijkt prima maar bij alle drie is er iets aan de hand.
Ronke is tandarts, en de enige van de drie met een Nigeriaanse vriend. De anderen denken dat hij niet de juiste is want zij vinden Nigeriaanse mannen niet te vertrouwen. Toch droomt zij van een toekomst met hem en wil een gezin. Ze houdt van lekker eten en koken.
Boo heeft een gezin maar wil juist vrij zijn. Ze werkt parttime bij een wetenschappelijke denktank.
Simi droomt ook niet van een gezin. Haar man is klaar voor kinderen maar zij wil dat eigenlijk helemaal niet. Ze werkt voor een modehuis en doet daar de marketing. Hun vriendschap was ontzettend hecht, ze herkenden elkaar doordat ze alledrie zowel Brits als Nigeriaans zijn en tegen dezelfde dingen aan liepen. Ze konden er goed over praten samen en deelden alles. Hun band leek onverbrekelijk.
Op een dag stapt Isobel, een oude vriendin van Simi uit Nigeria, hun leven binnen. Ronald wordt er als eerste mee geconfronteerd bij een lunch die ze dacht met Simi alleen te hebben, maar dat was Isobel ineens. Ronke weet niet wat ze ervan moet denken. Isobel is mooi maar ook overdreven. Ze maakt veel indruk en is erg flamboyant en ook erg rijk. Simi vertelt later dat Isobel het erg zwaar heeft gehad en daarom nu door haar vader verwend wordt.
De meiden geven het een kans en in het begin lijkt ze de andere drie te stimuleren en het beste in iedereen naar boven te halen, maar al gauw wordt duidelijk dat Isobel erg manipulatief is en ontpopt ze zich tot een grote stoorzender die de hechte vriendinnen uit elkaar drijft.
Wahala betekent storen en je hebt al snel in de gaten dat er een stoorzender in het verhaal zit. De openingsscène van het boek wijst ook al op iets wat heel erg fout gaat dus die onderhuidse spanning blijft steeds een beetje voelbaar. Ik vroeg me af waar en wanneer het mis zou gaan en kreeg bij die eerste lunch ook al meteen bad vibes van Isobel. Ik vond het erg goed opgebouwd. Het was direct duidelijk dat dit verhaal meerdere lagen had en dat vond ik erg goed uitgewerkt.
De schrijfstijl is vlot en neemt je goed mee in de sfeer. Je gaat mee naar het restaurant, je ruikt en proeft het eten, je geniet van de gesprekken en voelt de warme vriendschap. Je krijgt ook veel van de Nigeriaanse cultuur mee en dat is erg interessant. Zeker wanneer je daar zoals ik nog niets van af weet. Ik kan me voorstellen dat voor mensen die daar wel bekend mee zijn, dit verhaal een feest van herkenning is.
De setting en de uitwerking voelt als een diverse soort van Sex and the City. Ik was dan ook blij verrast dat er een serie van gemaakt gaat worden. Daar leent het verhaal zich prima voor.

De eigen ervaring met Lagos zorgt voor extra verdieping in dit verhaal. Nikki is ooit aan een studie geneeskunde begonnen, maar stopte daar op haar twintigste mee. Daarna verhuisde ze naar Londen en ging werken in de reclame. Ze woont nu in Dorset met haar man en twee honden.
Wahala is geïnspireerd op een lange lunch met vrienden en zal wereldwijd gepubliceerd gaan worden. Helemaal terecht want het voelt helemaal niet als een debuutroman. Het lijkt alsof Nikki May al jaren schrijft en het boek voelt en leest ook als een tv-serie. BBC heeft dat dus goed ingeschat want ze gaan daadwerkelijk een serie maken van dit verhaal.

In a beautiful small coastal town in the Scottish Highlands we meet Leonie Baxter, a pretty, kind, warm and caring young woman who finds herself out of a job and out of a relationship. She’s not someone who gets depressed fast but now her life has been turned upside down, it's hard to stay positive. She needs to decide and turn her life around, but how? She has to figure out how to start again.
To ease her worries, she goes on a walk in the woods with her rescue puppy. When she starts chasing a fox, Leonie stumbles across a beautiful and intriguing house, fully furnished but unoccupied. She is determined to find out more, after all, she is a journalist and reporting is in her nature.
She soon finds out this will not be an easy task. The not so friendly neighbour chases her away and refuses to answer questions. Leonie needs a plan to find out more about the house and to get on the good side of Lily Cruickshank who lives in the cottage next door. Ofcourse she also needs to move on after the heartbreak and find a new job.
When she contacts the mysterious Flynn Talbot, finds out more and more about the house, the Talbots and Lily, things get entangled with one another and Leonie has to find a way to uncover all the secrets and make sense of it all as Cupid shoots some arrows too.
Julie Shackman has always wanted to write feel-good romance. The cottage in the Highlands will be published on the 1st of december, 2022 and is the third book in the Scottish escapes series. For next year she already has the publication of two more books planned so it's save to say she is quite good at it. The first two books in the Scottish escapes series were much loved and highly appreciated. I am convinced the cottage in the Highlands will be a success too. This book has everything you look for in a small town/Highlands/holiday season/ feel good romance and more!
It was obvious to me that ms. Shackman writes about what she knows and loves. As a former journalist, she builds great stories with a lot of love for details without it being too slow paced or too much described. The pace is just perfect. The details paint a picture right before your eyes. The plot has some twists I never saw coming. There are some secrets in this story that will break your heart as others will bring joy and laughter.
It's very interesting to read how journalists work. I really love the parts about Leonie's job. The investigation for a scoop, the way Leonie contacts people, the interviews, you can tell ms. Shackman knows the trade herself very well.
The way she shows the surroundings is wonderful too. I could see myself walking through the village, as well as Glasgow. The cozy atmosphere of the village, buzzing with seasonal preparations, the busy city, mysterious woods, the coastal view, it's dreamy and you can tell she lives there herself. It's shown with so much love and eye for detail.
The various characters in the story are portrayed to immediately steal your heart. Especially Leonie's rescue puppy. I read somewhere that Julie Shackman has a Romanian rescue puppy herself, named Cooper. I bet there are some true stories in here that are based on Cooper. Anyone with a dog will recognize each anecdote, it's just too cute!
Summarizing, Julie Shackman knows how to tell a great story. As a journalist living in Scotland, details about the surroundings and Leonie's job are well written and in-depth. As a dog mother she worked out the supporting act, Leonie's puppy, to perfection as well. The characters developed in a way you can feel for them all and they have splendid dialogues.
The pace of the story is very nice, the romance is clean and slow-paced. The mystery and the investigations are, to me, the cherry on top of this delicious pie. The last part of the book has a faster pace and is used to wrap up all the lose ends in an original way and perfectly fitting for the story. She did however, leave enough space for more. Personally I can't wait. I love stories like this. It's very complete, all the ingredients to make it a very good book are there.

NetGalley's Book Advocate Toolkit was the first item I've read on Netgalley. I signed up some time ago but was a bit overwhelmed to get started to take my reviewing to the next level.
Last year I started to read books again and found out it was a lot of fun to write reviews of the books I read. I changed my social media more and more towards bookish accounts. I also started a Goodreads and Hebban-account to write longer reviews, because I started recieving reviewcopies from publishers and authors. A fellow-bookstagrammer pointed Netgalley to me so here I am, but where to start?
NetGalley's Book Advocate Toolkit is very helpful. In compact blocks several social media and review options are explained, along with tips, do's and don'ts. I even found the golden tip for me, to start using Canva to up my game on Instagram, Tiktok etc. It's essential to complete your profile and make good content on the bookish sites and your socials, so you can get approved for reading here on NetGalley. I'm just starting, but i am very happy to have read this Toolkit. The pointers are very handy and I'm sure I'll be back to check them again once I have made another babystep towards my goal: Read and review new great books in advance! The Christmas Castle in Scotland by Julie Caplin

You may remember Izzy McBride from Romantic Escapes 8: The cosy cottage in Ireland. This was the story of Hannah and Connor, but Izzy took that same cooking course at the world-renowned Killorgally Cookery school in county Kerry. She inherited her great uncle Bill's castle in the Scottish Highlands and intends to turn it into a boutique bed and breakfast. As she returns home from the cooking course, she finds out her eccentric mother Xanthe has already rented a room to a very handsome but mysterious writer. To make things worse, she has also accepted a high-end booking for Christmas from very demanding guests, and the castle is nowhere near ready! It will be a race against the clock to get everything done. As Izzy tries her very best to ready the castle and prepare for the festivities, she and Ross grow closer. There's a risk everybody is going to be snowed in for Christmas, and it's not yet determined if that is a blessing or a curse.
Julie Caplin knows how to tell a beautiful story. All the ingredients for a seasonal feel-good romance are here. The beautiful castle, the mysterious Highlands and the picturesque village paint a gorgeous picture, especially in wintertime. Everywhere Izzy goes, we see the surroundings through her eyes and we can dream away. The atmosphere is romantic and cosy and all the characters you meet are heartwarming and funny. Izzy is the sweetest young woman, always wanting to take care of everyone and her mother Xanthe is a force to be reckoned with. Scenes with her are hilarious. She is made for drama but somehow she steals your heart anyway because she is loud but also kind and generous.
The romance between Izzy and Ross is slowly building up. You get to know them well as you read along and find out what their obstacles are. The story works towards the grand finale, Christmas. Will the castle be ready? Do Izzy and Ross get together? Will the guests be happy with everything?
The plot is a classic, although there are some original twists that are quite nice. The story has a relaxed pace, due to the attention that is paid to the surroundings, the food and lovingly written emotions. That slow pace is not irritating, in this story it's rather pleasant. I was not in a rush to say goodbye to all the lovely characters. The end was exactly what I was hoping for and it suits the storyline.
All and all not a complicated story but 100% feel-good. Written with a lot of TLC.

Like the previous books it can be read as a standalone, but since the main character, Izzy McBride, was already introduced in the previous story (Romantic Escapes book 8: The cosy cottage in Ireland), it's more fun if you read the books in the right order. Romantic escapes book 10: The French champagne chateau will be published June 6th, 2023. This will be the story of Hattie and Luc. You meet Hattie in the Christmas castle in Scotland. She arrives as a guest at the castle. The last chapter, called '6 months later', is a preview to Hattie's story in book 10 and it makes me want to read that one too, for sure!

Her knowledge about the continent and good food are very visible in the stories, taking them to the next level. You really experience what she saw and tasted. It is a very large part of what makes the stories so special and very enjoyable!

She arrives as a guest at the castle. The last chapter, called '6 months later', is a preview to Hattie's story in book 10 and it makes me want to read that one too, for sure!

Scrolling Netgalley for hidden gems I found The Christmas trip by Sandy Barker. I never read any books by her, but people kept telling me that if I like Julie Caplin's Romantic Escapes or the work of Sarah Morgan I will most definitely love her books as well. It did indeed look exactly like my cup of tea so I was very happy when HarperCollins UK / One more chapter accepted my request. Thank you for letting me read an advanced copy.

A year has passed and it's Christmas time again. Best friends Chloe, Jules and Lucy are all in a relationship and live in different parts of the world.
Chloe is living in Hollywood with her celebrity boyfriend Archer. She is very much in love but it's been a turbulent year and she is dying to get away and spend some quality time together.
Jules lives in Melbourne and loves it there. Her boyfriend Matt is a winemaker. She shares a flat and lately that's too crowded for her. She wants a place of her own.
Her brother Will has a relationship with Lucy, who feels it's pretty hard to maintain a long-distance relationship, flying between London and Colorado.
Archer was planning to take Chloe to Paris, but an Icelandic vulcano ruined that plan. Instead he surprises her by bringing her friends together for an epic Christmas they'll never forget.
The book starts with a prologue: Twelve years ago. The May Ladies - Mexico. In this prologue Jules, Chloe and Lucy just checked in for a vacation after Jules' breakup and the reader is informed about the origin of their friendship and why they call themselves the May Ladies. It's a modern scene of three young women with regular issues and talks but it confused me a bit. When I read what the book was about, I saw that Jules lives in Melbourne, but in this prologue Chloe was called the Aussie and there were some other things that confused me. The Christmas trip starts with a trip in the prologue but that's not the trip this book is about. Right after the prologue we switch to Chloe in Los Angeles and that confused me because she was the Aussie. Later on things get more clear and the origin is often enough explained, but still I felt like I was missing out on a lot of fun. Especially when they were all together in Hawaii, the place means something to them and you had to pay attention to who says or thinks what. It can feel a bit overwhelming and/or crowded. Nevertheless, you read about 3 couples with regular issues and the holiday look and feel is very uplifting and that made it a very pleasant to read story. The characters are recognizable and you can really relate to the women and their struggles in love, friendship and life in general.
I found out this book is the second in a series so I downloaded the first too, because I wanted to know more about how the relationships were formed and that is what you read about in book one: The Christmas swap.
Although the books are suitable to be read as stand alone, I would strongly recommend to read the books in the right order. That way you have all the information and will not get confused. You will have so much more fun on this trip! It makes a difference if you travel along with people you've just met or spend a vacation with people you know and love. If you are looking for a feel-good Christmas trip, this is definitely the one you need, but make sure you don't miss out on the Christmas swap!
I love how the story is built and how everything unfolded towards the end. The lovable characters and the very realistic issues they deal with, the absolutely fabulous setting and surroundings and the humor will make you read this book with a smile.

Eilandgevoel en troostgebakjes balanceren traumatische onzekerheden in feelgood met diepgang.
‘De kleine theetuin brengt geluk’ van Anne West is het derde deel van de Theetuin-serie, maar is prima los te lezen. De hoofdpersonen in dit verhaal zijn Sarah en Emma. Sarah werkte in de zorg, maar liep daar helemaal vast. Van bakken wordt ze gelukkig, daarom grijpt ze haar kans als Fleur iemand zoekt die in de theetuin kan helpen. Sarah's droom is patissier worden en de theetuin kan een ideaal opstapje zijn. Dan valt Fleur langdurig uit en moet Sarah alles alleen doen. Er komt heel wat op haar af, maar gelukkig is daar Cas. Hij steunt Sarah en de vonk slaat over, maar dat kan helemaal niet.. of wel?
Emma helpt bedrijven met problemen en had geïnvesteerd in het hotel van Koen. Ze is daarom regelmatig op Texel te vinden en logeert dan bij de moeder van Sarah. Hierdoor wordt het gemis van een eigen thuis steeds meer voelbaar. Wanneer dan ook nog haar eigen moeder, die haar als kind in de steek heeft gelaten, ineens contact zoekt, raakt Emma helemaal in de war. Zeker als alles helemaal anders loopt dan verwacht.
Na de eerste twee delen verwachtte ik weer een hartverwarmende feelgood met wat diepere lagen en ik werd zeker niet teleurgesteld. Sarah heeft het een en ander meegemaakt en haar leven kabbelt een beetje op haar geliefde Texel. Ze verlangt naar meer en moet de sprong wagen om haar dromen uit te laten komen.
Emma heeft een hele moeilijke jeugd gehad en snakt naar een plek om zich thuis te voelen. Dan wordt ze geconfronteerd met dat verleden en dat moet ze een plek zien te geven.
Behalve Sarah en Emma kleuren nog een aantal hartverwarmende personages het verhaal verder in en is het genieten van de heerlijke eilandsfeer van Texel met de nodige humor en vlinders waardoor je regelmatig een glimlach op je gezicht krijgt.
Anne West schuwt actuele problemen en trauma's niet. De dames krijgen het nodige voor de kiezen en dat wordt realistisch verteld maar nergens wordt het verhaal te zwaar. Door de prettige opbouw en de fijne schrijfstijl van West blijft het een heerlijke feelgood en een erg fijn verhaal om te lezen.

Stukje voor stukje wordt deze avond gereconstrueerd en net wanneer je denkt te weten hoe het zit, krijgt het verhaal weer een compleet andere wending. De schrijfstijl kon me niet meteen bekoren. The Christmas competition is the 10th Christmas mountain story. In this lovely new addition we get to know Ruby Curtis. She has a cute small-town doggie spa. Things are going very well, but because of the growth the location is not big enough anymore. She needs a bigger location. The perfect chance arrives when the holiday competition is announced. Ruby could win a renovating building off Main Street, that would be perfect!
Connor Reed is her best friend's older brother. He is also in the competition, practically the whole town is. For Connor there are some personal reasons to win the building besides wanting it for his family's bank.
Connor is always teasing Ruby, he has done so since they were kids. But now that they are spending more and more time together, sparks begin to fly. Ruby starts to realise that Connor is more than the annoying older brother of her bestie. He is actually pretty nice (and really hot) but giving in to those feelings might risk their friendship.
The best thing about this book is that it really sucks you right into that lovely small town and the holiday spirit. The surroundings are beautiful, the characters are heartwarming and it is so great to see how a childhood friendship evolves into a beautiful love story. The holiday spirit is everywhere, the setting with the competition doesn't bring mean streaks but is ever inspiring and uplifting. Ruby and Connor don't ever put the other one down to get the building. It's warm and emotional to see them growing closer. The ultimate Christmas love. A very enjoyable and sweet story.
Although Susan Hatler is a New York Times bestselling author, this was the first book I read of her. I will make sure to read more!

De single Josefien woont met haar kater Lenny in een klein flatje en is helemaal verzot van Downton Abbey. Elk jaar met Valentijnsdag luistert ze naar het romantische verhaal van haar oma. Al 40 jaar lang stuurt een anonieme aanbidder elk jaar een prachtig boeket naar oma op 14 februari onder de naam 'Valentijn'. Oma wordt nu 90 jaar en Josefien vindt het hoogste tijd om uit te zoeken wie de bloemen stuurt. Haar speurtocht brengt haar naar een bloemisterij in een klein dorpje en de knappe bloemist weet natuurlijk van niets. Josefien vermoedt dat hij iets verbergt. Ze solliciteert naar een baantje in zijn winkel om erachter te komen, maar of dat zo'n goed idee was?
'Rozen met liefde' is een heerlijk romantisch verhaal waar de lieve, ietwat onhandige Josefien te maken krijgt met de nodige obstakels op haar pad. Met haar hartverwarmende actie om het mysterie op te lossen, won ze me onmiddellijk voor haar. De scènes met Lenny en de aardige maar opdringerige buurman lieten me grinniken. De verhaallijn rondom de bloemist is typisch feelgood romance, maar dan met een leuke plottwist op het einde. Enige kritiekpuntje zou kunnen zijn dat het daar wel even heel erg snel gaat en het allemaal niet uitblinkt aan diepgang, maar we moeten wel in ogenschouw nemen dat dit een kort verhaal is, en dan vind ik het totaal niet storend.
