The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett

A sequel to Chasing Vermeer (hailed as a DaVinci Code for kids), which I thought was a so-so book--great premise, not so great execution--kinda like the DaVinci Code! I gave the author another shot since this book's mystery centers around Frank Lloyd Wright. Not too impressed. But it does introduce kids to one of the greatest archhitects ever, so it gets some credit for that.

A gift from a friend that I decided to casually read simply because umm, I'm not so good at dating. Not as terrifying as some dating books, but I still had some issues. But I always have issues, which perhaps explains the singleness. But the concept was fun!

Sequel to Wicked, which I absolutely loved. A little disappointing. Frankly, I don't think any of his books have quite lived up to Wicked. But I keep reading them, because they're still fun, even though I haven't been blown away in quite some time
The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride

Amazing memoir about McBride's family--his Jewish mother left her family behind, married two black men and raised a giant family in NYC. She was a fierce rebel as she sent her entire family through college, many through grad school, all as they hovered on the edge of poverty (both of her husbands died way too soon). Worth checking out, and a fairly quick read.

These books are continually recommended by some of my favorite people. I've tried one other Beany book and wasn't impressed. Still not captivated or charmed, so will probably stop being curious about these. They recommend so many things--I can't like everything they like!

A book that took forever to read, but was well worth it. Fabulous, and I'm glad I didn't waste time on the recent movie (which got awful reviews). It's a committment, but it's southern gothic and politics at its finest. For people interested in the South, it's essential.

A book centering on WWI--some truly graphic stuff that made it not the best stuff for bedtime reading. But the ending wasn't right(or rather the last third)--it just seemed Too Much. I kept reading because I was curious, but not because I was really enjoying it or was truly captivated--does that make sense?

I love this serires--great representation of group friendship. The girls are awkward and have problems that ring true. And they always make me cry just a little.
