Just a delicious little book. So warm and cozy. My only complaint is that I want more of it bc I really loved the characters.

All of the puzzles and riddles and clever storybuilding gets a tad confusing at times if youre bad at names and bad at your bible (me I'm very bad at those things) but overall I couldn't put it down and NEEDED to know what happens next. Very much a book where solving a problem unlocks another problem that unlocks a mystery that poses a new problem.

In my book hangover heart this feels like a 5 star book but I know in my brain there were places it lacked a bit for me. But also those lacks were mostly my fault for not remembering earlier stuff. This is probably a case of me being unable to rate first books in a series 5 stars bc I was itching to pick this one up every time I had to step away
The Icepick Surgeon: Murder, Fraud, Sabotage, Piracy, and Other Dastardly Deeds Perpetuated in the Name of Science by Sam Kean

Very well researched and written well. Lots of interesting cases, and more variety of crimes than I anticipated. For a book that's a bunch of stories put together into one everything is laced together pretty well. Kean is also good at anticipating what the reader is thinking and guiding them though the thoughts and feelings they may be having which is super helpful since this book is pretty heavy in places.

Even though I understood all the references the overall vibes of the references both true crime and video games were clunky as hell. I don't regret spending 2.5 hours of my life on this book but it definitely goes into the 'im gonna forget about this book' pile

The first 100 or so pages of this book were painful for me, not that it was bad writing just that I am a woman in stem (geochemistry) and was already having an existential crisis about only working with men. So all the men in stem=bad was painful (shes right they are bad but it just hurts to see they used to be worse). After I  reached a certain pivotal moment in the book everything started to pickup and I really enjoyed the book. We love strong women and found family just had to wade through some painful stuff to get there. But that's kinda the Whole Point bc Elizabeth had to live that shit and still persevered. Oh also the U.S. cover of this book is uggo and doesn't do the contents or themes of the book any justice.

Artfully crafted and emotionally destructive in the most fulfilling way. The references in this book are nothing short of perfect, even though it is filled with media references every single one does something to drive the story and that is something that cannot be said of other similar books. But I'll be real there is no other similar books. Tomorrow^3 is in a league of its own and I need a copy for myself asap.

It was fine, no better no worse. Felt a bit empty(?) idk how to describe the feeling. I'd probably appreciate it more if I had a sister/ similar family dymanics. Very fast read.

It's lovely background to have, but it was really short. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing but it felt a bit silly to seek out and read a 32-page book.
