Better than the first in the series, kept my attention. Some of the pace is almost too fast, some events seem too convenient. Possible unpopular opinion:
Mal is a prick and she should have chosen Nikolai

I probably rated this book higher than I should have purely because I read the Six of Crows duology first and know where it's going. I read this quickly, enjoyed it. However it suffers from some problems I see in young adult fiction a lot. Things happen too quickly, are too convenient at times to move the plot along. The protagonist doesn't have much of a personality besides being in love with another character with no personality. It gets better towards the end, but really I liked the villain. I will read the next book in the series.

The story is okay, the concept is interesting but the first half of the book is quite slow. There is a disappointing amount of casual misogyny and the sexualizing of teenagers. The main character
asks to grab a woman's breasts to "prove" he can do what he wants in the realm.
If I wasn't so turned off by the representation of women, the setup for the rest of the series would be interesting.

A nation of two. Soul love.

Life is divided up into phases. Each one is very different from the others, and you have to be able to recognize what is expected of you in each phase. That's the secret of successful living.

Did not finish book.
I thought the math would be a bit higher level. The text portions read too much like a children's book.

Slow start, but picks up about half way through. Different to Christie's other novels, there's a larger focus on interpersonal relationships, which is offers a welcome variety.
