The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson

Finally a dark witchy novel!! Haven’t read a truly dark novel about witches since college. This is what I was craving and I’m so happy Alexis delivered with her debut novel no less!! Very impressive. I hope there’s a sequel?? I’d love to see more of Ezra and Immanuelle’s story unfold

Apparently Alexis gets her book ideas from dreams which is pretty dope and witchy in and of itself 👀😍 🌚

Um, well that was absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful sequel to THITCS!! We learned more about our main characters from the first book and switched POVs to the other main love interest, Arthur ❤️ if the first book felt like a warm hug, this book feels like a doubly warm hug. This series, now, are the coziest books I’ve ever read and I adore them with every part of my being.

The first half was great but then the story became very difficult to follow. There were more POVs thrown in all of the sudden and I didn’t see the benefit in adding them halfway through the book. Also nothing really happened in here?? Where were the stakes?!! I didn’t feel the push, the anger, the urgency, the frightfulness of being in the vicinity of this monster’s random attacks?? I did not feel it. It was odd. I have his other book, The Changling, on my tbr but if it’s anything like this one.. might have to skip.

I flew through this!! I didn’t know what this was going in and I had so much fun! What a fun, paranormal, mystery!! I wish there was more ~witchy~ in here but I loved the indigenous folklore!!! I’ve had this on my tbr forever and I’m so glad I finally read it!

I thought this subject would be more interesting to me but alas it was so boring to read about 🤣😂 followed it up with an author interview that felt just as blah as the book did. I’m definitely in the minority here so don’t let this review stop you. This was really good on audio if you prefer to read your nonfiction that way.

I lost such interest in this.. it was so formulaic. The audiobook was good and very easy to listen to without fully paying attention. I wasn’t connecting to anyone. I can see why others love this but it was not for me and that sucks because I really wanted to enjoy this more 🙃

I have to say, this is my least favorite dystopian YA book. Maze runner was better than this and I’m glad I skipped this when it was popular. This would have given me a terrible idea of what science fiction is. I decided to read this because the Netflix movie just came out. I’m hoping it’s better than this but the reviews honestly haven’t been great.

I didn’t like that people before they underwent the surgery were called “uglies.” I get why they’re called that but I just didn’t vibe with it as a concept. Teenagers reading this book are already in an uncertain, transitory period where their looks matter and I don’t think this book is sending the best message.

This book was super shallow in the details and I didn’t like that either. There was definitely a pacing issue here and I expected more details since this is the first book in a series. I will not be continuing.

This felt never-ending on audio even with so much happening 😂🤣 This book is ridiculous and that’s kind of the point so I tried to not let that affect my enjoyment but.. it did. I didn’t really like one of the twists
being that the bride to be was secretly in love with her best friend who made a plan to steal her gifts with a paid actor so she wouldn’t marry a guy she hated. There were no indicators that either of them had feelings for each other until the MC thought of it.
Other than that, this was cute. Things wrapped up a little too quickly for me but that seems common with cozy mystery romances. Not really my cup of tea but it was funny and enjoyable to an extent.

I kind of hated this 😂😂 Not having the best luck with short story collections this year!! First, Out There Screaming and now this.. both horror short story collections too. Tsk tsk. This book was too abstract for me. Half the stories didn’t make sense. My favorite was The Inventory, followed by The Husband Stitch and Real Women Have Bodies. I hated the last one and really think the order of the stories matter. If a better story was put last I think I would have rated this more of a 3.5 perhaps.
