Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
3.0
I have to say, this is my least favorite dystopian YA book. Maze runner was better than this and I’m glad I skipped this when it was popular. This would have given me a terrible idea of what science fiction is. I decided to read this because the Netflix movie just came out. I’m hoping it’s better than this but the reviews honestly haven’t been great.
I didn’t like that people before they underwent the surgery were called “uglies.” I get why they’re called that but I just didn’t vibe with it as a concept. Teenagers reading this book are already in an uncertain, transitory period where their looks matter and I don’t think this book is sending the best message.
This book was super shallow in the details and I didn’t like that either. There was definitely a pacing issue here and I expected more details since this is the first book in a series. I will not be continuing.
