Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
3.0
I read this book hot on the heels of finishing the Hulu show and quite honestly I don't know how I feel about either. It seems like the abundance of fatphobia/fat-shaming in the book is meant to prove a point somehow but I don't think the author accomplished that point. Some of the characters were delightful, Francis was lovely and Lars had me won over by the end as well. I think the book is fine...but some interesting plot choices were made and I understand why they were changed for the Hulu show.
Recursion by Blake Crouch
4.0
God damn if Blake Crouch doesn’t know how to write a good love story. With both Dark Matter and Recursion I thought I know where the story was going, and at some point I’ll stop kidding myself into believing that. There’s always a turning point in his books where I say to myself “well, guess this is what I’m spending my afternoon doing” because I just can’t put it down. I love this book. The science, the love story, tragic question of what can be done with the power of memory? Chefs kiss.
Pride and Prejudice (Masterpiece Library Edition) by Jane Austen
5.0
Of all of the books I've read recently, this is the one I can't stop thinking about. There is something about the way Austen writes that grows on you the more you read. It was amazing to read such an old book and be able to map sentiments to modern ideas. I couldn't recommend this book enough and it is one of the first books I've read in a long time that I'm already planning on rereading.
The Troop by Nick Cutter
4.0
This book scared the living hell out of me. I had to flip to the end halfway in and ruin it for myself to see who, if anyone, survived. Cutter did an amazing job telling a terrifying story and the imagery will haunt my dreams just like it does the boys. This is the first, and probably only, horror book I have ever read. For a contemporary romance gal I really ventured out of my safety zone and I think I’m ready to head back to low stakes summer fun. The amount of emotion this book made me feel was worth 4 stars alone. I couldn’t give it 5 stars because I don’t actually know that I liked it? I just know that it was well written and absolutely horrifying.
Emma by Jane Austen
4.0
Emma was as unlovable a character as Austen promised she would be, and yet by the end you couldn't help but root for her. Emma reads as almost a who-dun-it of romance novels, trying to guess who Emma would pair with who all while wondering if the main character herself doth protest too much. There's no denying Austen can give you 25 characters and you'll know and have opinions on each and every one of them. A classic for a reason.
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
4.0
A perfectly enjoyable book. A little sexy, super fun, and overall a fast paced summer read. I can’t think of one negative thing to say about the book. It reminds me a bit of The Devil Wears Prada mixed with All American Girl. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick romance with a true enemies to lovers plot. I will be reading more Sally Thorne!
The Setup by Lizzy Dent
3.0
This book was satisfying and entirely frustrating. I don’t know that I’ve ever wanted to shake a protagonist more than I wanted to shake Mara. More than anything I wish this book had been bulked up a bit, all of the varying plot lines could have used more development and more depth. Overall an easy summer read with a satisfying conclusion, but good god is the main character annoying for 90% of the book.
Upgrade by Blake Crouch
4.0
For some reason this book hurt. More so than Dark Matter and Recursion, Upgrade felt like a possible reality and it scared the living shit out of me and made me deeply sad about the state of our world. Crouch has a wonderful way of making sci-fi/thrillers accessible and bingeable. I do wish we were able to spend more time with the characters, I did feel the ending was a tad rushed in this book. Even though after this book I’ll have to watch a comfort show to fall asleep, I’ll be back for more with the next book.
The Holiday Trap by Roan Parrish
3.0
This book is good but not great. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and descriptions. Truman and his entire story line? Great. Honestly, I wish the whole book would have been about him. It would have been so satisfying to see him have an actual conflict with Guy and just get all of the wonderful subplots baked in an more fleshed out story. I love Greta, but her storyline left something to be desired. More than anything, this Greta’s storyline felt like a way to check off every box on the liberal leftists queer checklist in a sellout sort of way. I would read another Roan Parish, but would it probably be more choosey with which one.
The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
4.0
Great book. A bit of a slow start, was honestly expecting to end with a 3 star but the second half of the book really saved the day. An enemies to lovers trope with a twist in the middle that doesn’t side track the plot too much. The epilogue made me cry, and the book had some mild spice that kept things interesting. And last but not least: WHY WERE WE NOT GIVEN THE ACTUAL LOVE SCORE, did I just miss it?! Yes, we get it, a diamond match…but what was it? My favorite Christina Lauren so far.
