This was not what I expected, and I loved it. It starts in modern-day New York City before diving into a very intricate fantasy world with immortal beings, gods, and monsters. It's definitely more fantasy than romance. Super slow burn, with very little spice. There's lots of world-building, political intrigue, and history, as expected from the first book in a series. Definitely had to use every single one of my brain cells to get through all that info. I really enjoyed the story and loved all the characters, so I'm definitely going to binge-read the rest of the series.

A really cute closed-door romance with a brother's best friend trope, not to mention the prettiest book cover. rtc

this was painfully relatable. i resonated so much with being a child of immigrant parents and the pressures of wanting to make them proud, while being constantly compared to my much smarter cousins. so i loved and appreciated the overall message that this book conveyed. the only thing that fell flat for me was the romance between aaron and jenna. there was also one part of the book where aaron said something that rubbed me the wrong way, but otherwise it was an okay read.

this book made me want to drop everything, move to prince edward island, and eat my weight in oysters, even though i'm allergic to seafood. crazy how i can feel so homesick for a place i've never been to. my first carley fortune book and it definitely won't be my last.

i loved the childhood friends to lovers trope and adored lucas and lois's backstory, but the dialogue was too immature for my liking. lucas was also lowkey getting on my nerves.
