Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar
5.0
I read “Recognizing the stranger” immediately prior to this, which is (among other things) a rumination on the act of recognition as a literary device, as a legal instrument, as an appeal for humanity. Somehow this happened to be a pitch perfect primer for reading Martyr!, because “recognizing the stranger” is such a multi-layered theme within the novel. I’m sitting with it, I’m sobbing with it.
