A moving and compelling portrait of casual employment in factories and what it takes for a human being to process your food. The English translation has helpful contextual endnotes. Thank you for introducing me to Thierry Metz.
The Day the World Stops Shopping: How Ending Consumerism Saves the Environment and Ourselves by J.B. MacKinnon

Ties it all together but still I was left wanting something more. I think it’s the tension between actionable steps we can take as individuals vs the foundational requirement for societal transformation - the counterculture needs to become the culture. But also maybe we need to physically burn cash to stop consumption?? But in the end, I am inspired to - if not stop shopping entirely - at least consume more mindfully.

Learned the word “aedicula” (a small shrine). Magical realism for the precariously employed.

First book of 2024, gifted from a friend who knew reading this quiet, soft story would make me cry in a good way. Not for the cynics!
