Childhood lovers & lowkey enemies to lovers. Ohh i love this๐ค๐ป๐ซ
Plot: since it's a series so i am not really sure where the story is going for now. But i am loving it. My favourite part of this book is the childhood flashbacks, they are so cute and innocent- it breaks my heart thinking about what they could have had. Stacey Stacey Stacey I want to hug her and Kade has no idea what happened. :(
The chemistry, the romance, the smut wow!

The ending just left me speechless and miserable. Idk idk whyy but i was rooting for Delaura and Sierva Maria.
In a way this book felt similar to love in the time of cholera, in that book Marquez says "to conclude once again that the symptoms of
love were the same as those of cholera." And in this book Marquez is hinting as if Love is one of the demons haunting our existence.

Dickens does it again, i remember reading ๐ ๐๐บ๐ ๐พ ๐๐ฟ ๐๐๐ ๐ผ๐๐๐๐พ๐ and feeling miserable and the same thing happened again and yeah i cried this time. :(
The story follows a young boy, Pip who has great ambitions and expectations. I'll try to write the review with respect to his relationships with other people in the story.
๐ฏ๏ธ๐๐ข๐ฉ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ : i feel like this is one of the most important dynamics in the story, Pip falls in love with her at the first sight for her and continues to love her till the end. The love he has for Estella defies everything; logic and reason

Words cannot describe how much i loved this book. Idk there were tears in my eyes by the end of the book, the way Kierkegaard talks about Abraham touched my heart. As a muslim, a believer of Abrahamic faith, i couldn't help but agree with Kierkegaard and his admiration for Abraham and faith.
It is human to complain, human to weep with one who weeps, but it
is greater to have faith and more blessed to behold the believer for it is great to give up one's desire, but greater to stick to it after
having given it up; it is great to grasp hold of the eternal but greater to stick
to the temporal after having given it up.โ
The
dialectic of faith is the most refined and most remarkable of all dialectics, it
has an elevation that I can form a conception of but no more. For he who
loves God without faith reflects on himself, while the person who loves
God in faith reflects on God.โ
A believer is indeed great. He stands firm on his faith, renounces his desires for his faith.

Kierkegaard discusses the story of Abraham and his sacrifice through 3 parts:
Kierkegaard asks if a higher goal will justify suspending the ethical duties?
And then he argues that Abraham indeed suspends the ethical duties in order to fulfill his duties to god. Since he's ready to sacrifice Abraham's for his own sake(to fulfill god's command)and not for a higher ethical reason.
Faith is just this paradox, that the single individual as the particular is
higher than the universal, is justified before the latter, not as subordinate but
superior, though in such a way, be it noted, that it is the single individual
who, having been subordinate to the universal as the particular, now by
means of the universal becomes that individual who, as the particular,
stands in an absolute relation to the absolute. "
2. "๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ : ๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ๐? "
The ethical is the universal and as such, in turn, the divine. It is therefore
correct to say that all duty is ultimately duty to God; but if one cannot say
more one says in effect that really I have no duty to God. The duty becomes
duty to God by being referred to God, but I do not enter into relation with
God in the duty itself."
Kierkegaard argues that the ethical can be defined as universal and is associated with the divine and duty to God. Thus there are cases where one has to act against universal ethical principles to fulfill the duty to God. And then he talks about the Paradox of faith:
โซ๏ธ"Then faith's paradox is this, that the single individual is higher than the
universal, that the single individual (to recall a theological distinction less in
vogue these days) determines his relation to the universal through his
relation to the absolute, not his relation to the absolute through his relation
to the universal"
Faith is the paradox which makes an individual become higher than the universal. Thus as the individual is higher than the universal and thus there is an absolute duty to God. Thus when an individual makes an absolute relationship with universal, it makes the ethics relative .
This was my fav part of the book.
Abraham
makes two movements. He makes the infinite movement of resignation and
gives up his claim to Isaac, something no one can understand because it is a
private undertaking. But then he further makes, and at every moment is
making, the movement of faith.
Kierkegaard argues that Abraham doesn't need any approval from the universal, but instead from himself and God. He argues that Abraham doesn't act like a tragic hero, who would seek advice from others, neither does would disclose himself like a true hero. Instead, he loses the sight of his sufferings in his love for God and finds comfort in that faith.
But he who loves God has no
need of tears, needs no admiration, and forgets his suffering in love, indeed
forgets so completely that afterwards not the least hint of his pain would
remain were God himself not to remember it; for God sees in secret and
knows the distress and counts the tears and forgets nothing.
"
So either there is a paradox, that the single individual as the particular
stands in an absolute relation to the absolute, or Abraham is done for."
Thus Kierkegaard concludes the story with the paradox and leaves it up to the readers whether we accept it or not.
But the highest passion in a human being is faithโ
No one who lacks an infinite passion is ideal and
anyone who does have an infinite passion has long since saved his soulโ
โซ๏ธโnullum unquam exstitit magnum ingenium sine aliqua
dementiaโ [โthere was never great genius without some madness"For
the dementia here is the genius's suffering in life, is the expression, if I may
say so, of divine jealousy, while genius itself is the mark of divine favour...
Thus the genius is disorientated from the start in relation to the universal
and put into relation to the paradox, whether, in despair over his own
limitation, which in his own eyes turns his omnipotence into impotence, he
seeks a demonic reassurance and therefore will not admit the limitation to
either God or man, or he reassures himself religiously in love for the divineโ
How is madness related to genius? Can the one be constructed out of the
other? In what sense and to what extent is the genius master of his own
madness? For it goes without saying that to some degree he is indeed its
master, otherwise he would really be madโ
Now tears, certainly, are a terrible argumentum ad hominem,92
and there are no doubt those whom nothing else touches but who can still be
stirred by tearsโ
A proud and
noble nature can endure everything, but one thing it cannot endure, it cannot
endure pity. Pity implies an indignity that for such a person can only be
inflicted from above, for in himself he can never become an object of pity.โ
But faith is
not the aesthetic, or if it is, then faith has never existed just because it has
existed always.โ
Deeper natures never forget themselves and never become something other

Deeper natures never forget themselves and never become something other
than they were.โ

This book will always have a special place in my heart. Reader, it was my first book, it was the book which made me fall in love with reading, i remember back in 2016, i found a copy of this in our school library and i was so intrigued by it, so i took it home and read it. I read it again in 2017 and 2018 and 2019. And in 2024 once again. So cheers to Jane Eyre ๐ซฐ๐ป
Well reading it after so many years, i have a better understanding of the book. So many new thoughts and opinions which i would like to share here now. It's a passionate book with passionate characters, dealing with the idea of class, society, religion and gender norms. And we also have romance in it. Jane Eyre is the name of our main character, an orphan girl fighting the strings of fate to live a respectable life. Her life is taken by storm as she falls in love with Mr Rochester.
The dynamic between Jane and Mr Rochester is a toxic one with a lot of power imbalance, not only is Mr Rochester 20 years old but as well as her employer and is extremely rich and proud. Jane repeatedly throughout the novel addresses him as โmy masterโ and finds herself abiding by everything he says. But still she keeps her principles of self respect and passion for independence alive.
Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! - I have as much soul as you, - and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you! โ
I can live alone, if self-respect, and circumstances require me so to do. I need not sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld, or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.โ
However they both love each other and it's quite evident they are passionate about each other:

Honestly this book deserves all the hype it gets. And Dona Tartt is an amazing writer, she has her way with the words, it's just like reading a classic from 18th/19th century.
Some thoughts on the story and characters(may contain spoilers) :
It's an inverted murder mystery so we already know a lot of stuff and this in a way makes reading more exciting as the story unfolds. The book revolves around 6 young students who study Classics and language at the college of Vermont. Henry, Francis, Charles, Camilla, Bunny and Richard. And we also have an important character, their professor Julian Morrow.

๐Julian: coward (not my words, iykyk)
โPerhaps, I thought,
his reaction would be similar to my own. Perhaps he would see these
murders as a sad, wild thing, haunted and picturesque (I've done
everything,' old Tolstoy used to boast, 'I've even killed a man'), instead of
the basically selfish, evil act which it was.โ
I also have a ton of questions regarding certain parts of the story but I'll be posting them on reddit ig. Well regarding the story it's supposed to feel like a greek tragedy, which it does tbh. It's like the group of students are misfits in the current world and belong to ancient Greek.
โI liked to read โ Tom Swift, the Tolkien books โ but also
to watch television, which I did plenty of, lying on the carpet of our empty
living room in the long dull afternoons after schoolโ
โI felt my existence was tainted, in some subtle but essential way.โ
โWhy does that obstinate little voice in our heads torment us so?' he
said, looking round the table. 'Could it be because it reminds us that we are
alive, of our mortality, of our individual souls โ which, after all, we are too
afraid to surrender but yet make us feel more miserable than any other
thing?โ
โLove? Yes, but as old Cephalus once heard Sophocles say, the least of
we know that love is a cruel and terrible master. One loses oneself for the
sake of the other, but in doing so becomes enslaved and miserable to the
most capricious of all the gods.โ
โAristotle says in the Poetics,' said Henry, 'that objects such as corpses,
painful to view in themselves, can become delightful to contemplate in a
work of art.โ
โDeath is the mother of beauty,' said Henry.
'And what is beauty?'
'Terror,'
'Well said,' said Julian. 'Beauty is rarely soft or consolatory.
Quite the contrary. Genuine beauty is always quite alarming.'
โ
โTime is something which defies
spring and winter, birth and decay, the good and the bad, indifferently.
Something changeless and joyous and absolutely indestructible.โ
โBut if I've learned one thing in my short sad life, it is that that
particular platitude is a lie. Love doesn't conquer everything. And whoever
thinks it does is a fool.โ
โSome things are too terrible to grasp at once. Other things โ
naked, sputtering, indelible in their horror โ are too terrible to really ever
grasp at all. It is only later, in solitude, in memory, that the realization
dawns: when the ashes are cold; when the mourners have departed; when
one looks around and finds oneself- quite to one's surprise โ in an entirely
different world.โ
โAnd besides, is death really so terrible a thing? It seems terrible to you,
because you are young, but who is to say he is not better off now than you
are? Or โ if death is a journey to another place โ that you will not see him
again?โ
โExcept that my life, for the most part, has been very stale and colorless. Dead, I mean. The world has always been an empty place to me. I was incapable of enjoying even the simplest things. I felt dead in everything I did.โ
โThere is nothing wrong with the love of Beauty. But Beauty โ unless she is wed to something more meaningful โ is always superficial. It is not that your Julian chooses solely to concentrate on certain, exalted things; it is that he chooses to ignore others equally as important.โ

Henry: Is he innocent and just a victim of the circumstances or is he just a psychopath manipulating everyone around him?

Hmmmm.....
๐Francis: hides himself too much? deserves better tbh .
๐Charles: sweet in beginning and then idk what happened and he became a raging alcoholic and fucking ruined everything.
๐Camilla: sweet and cunning, or just helpless?

โThe dead appear to us in dreams, said Julian, because that's the only waythey can make us see them; what we see is only a projection, beamed froma great distance, light shining at us from a dead starโฆ

Honestly Marquez writes so beautifully and profoundly. He has his way with the words. It's simply impressive.
Now this is again one of those books which makes one uncomfortable. It's written from the perspective of a 90 year old man who apparently falls in love with a 14 year old. There are a lot of things to unpack here obviously, a lot of people might assume that Marquez is writing to romanticize pedophila and will judge the author based on this story. But that's simply not correct. 1st of its completely okay for authors to write about bad people and bad things. And in this case Marquez is simply trying to show us the dark side of his time. Historically child prostitution had been common in that part of the world and Marquez had experienced all this ugly stuff and he's simply trying to write about it. He's not romanticizing or glorifying any of it.

Yeah exactly everyone's belief system whether they believe in religion or not is actually same. It's not gonna change because someone thinks otherwise not unless the person himself wants to change.
As for saying religion is an illusion and it's been a tool used by man to comfort himself, I don't see why that's even an issue.
His arguments were pretty weak. I don't know about the whole psychoanalysis thing but will definitely read it but as far as philosophy and religion is concerned, he's himself confused about things. He talks how religion preaches about morality but then people keep doing immoral things and then he blames religion for it. How's religion responsible for that? The problem lies in the people and not the religion(that's my opinion).

This is exactly what i was looking for๐ค๐ป SAURON!
THERE'S A LOT OF SAURON IN THIS BOOK. The fall of Numenor chapters alternate with chapters narrating the rise of Sauron.
Some Quotes
"Of old there was Sauron the Maia, whom the Sindar in Beleriand named Gorthaur. In
the beginning of Arda Melkor seduced him to his allegiance, and he became the greatest
and most trusted of the servants of the Enemy, and the most perilous, for he could
assume many forms, and for long if he willed he could still appear noble and beautiful,
so as to deceive all but the most wary.
"
"Sauron had never reached this stage of nihilistic madness. He did not object to the
existence of the world, so long as he could do what he liked with it. He still had the
relics of positive purposes that descended from the good of the nature in which he
began: it had been his virtue (and therefore also the cause of his fall, and of his relapse)
that he loved order and coordination, and disliked all confusion and wasteful frictionโฆ"
"Now the Elves made many rings; but secretly Sauron made One Ring to rule all the
others, and their power was bound up with it, to be subject wholly to it and to last only
so long as it too should last. And much of the strength and will of Sauron passed into
that One Ring; for the power of the Elven-rings was very great, and that which should
govern them must be a thing of surpassing potency; and Sauron forged it in the
Mountain of Fire in the Land of Shadow. And while he wore the One Ring he could
perceive all the things that were done by means of the lesser rings, and he could see and
govern the very thoughts of those that wore them"
"This is a hard doom,โ said Sauron, โbut great kings must have their willโ, and he
submitted as one under compulsion, concealing his delight; for things had fallen out
according to his design"
"Now Sauron had great wisdom and knowledge, and could find words of seeming
reason for the persuasion of all but the most wary; and he could still assume a fair
countenance when he wished"
