Like many millennials I dig Kaufman's cinematic oeuvre, but after more than 700 pages of Antkind I can definitively say I'm not a fan of Kaufman the author. As others have mentioned in reviews, the first 300 pages were hilarious! But the gag became stale beyond the halfway point. Sorry, Charlie!
I learned some new bits of history from this book even though I've read many works about the advancements of physics in the 20th century. I actually wish I had read this first before Rhodes's The Making of the Atomic Bomb.
Second read-through 10 years after the first. I still love Auri best, and although some turns of phrase in this novella have become a bit stale, the atmosphere holds strong.
This was a beautifully written novella but I wish it were longer and, sadly, I wasn't in love with any of the characters. I will probably read more Kawabata in the future.
It's hard to give a modern rating to Shakespeare. I've decided I'm only rating his plays in reference to each other, so Twelfth Night gets 2.5 stars since I know I've read better Shakespeare.
