extremely convincing and compelling -- when the actual incident + resulting investigation was being described.  i get there's not too much to actually talk about, so you've gotta pad out the book a little, but i really didn't care for most of the sections where the author bopped around siberia.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 8%.
this is hugely interesting and SO dense and i am just not in enough of an academic headspace to grapple with it....

FUCKING phenomenal.  i cannot say enough good things about this goddamn book and how thoroughly it has enchanted me.  go into it knowing as little as possible about what it covers and you'll be completely swept off of your feet.

yeah if the long walk hadn't been so spectacular this would be by far my favourite of the bachmans -- tense, sick dread that just goes on and on until it simply can't anymore.  very very 70s and so delightful to get absorbed in.
