hmmm idk why but this didn't hit the same as it did the first time i read it -- still gorgeous and sprawling, but maybe not so much of a shock?

god am i ever glad i finally pushed through and finished this.  what an enormous, spectacular book -- i'm really gonna have to pace myself with the sequels so i don't burn out on them!!

basically the first story hooked me -- i think it really connected because of all of the time i've spent in chat rooms and, as a teenager, in forging relationships with strangers online that crossed some boundaries.  the other two stories were the pits.  really awful, amateurish writing and plots that didn't grab me nearly as much as the first one did.  read the title story, get your gross-out for the day, and don't bother with the rest.

EXACTLY as good as i was promised it would be.  simply one of the best nonfiction books i've ever read.

i have a deep and abiding affection for the opener and closer of this collection -- the middle two stories are really excellent too, but those two were pretty stellar standouts!!  idk why it took me so long to finish this but i'm glad i did eventually 😅

ALRIGHT CALL ME CRAZY but this was actually a whoooole lot better than i was expecting.  grappling with the nature of god and the devil in a world peopled by vampires kind of slays, actually, and anything that has a tender moment between louis and lestat earns my seal of approval.  also ENORMOUS armand feelings here.

one of the best nonfiction books i've ever read -- tense, compassionate, beautifully told, exquisitely researched.  i loved every minute of reading this.
