Siren Queen by Nghi Vo

A really good atmospheric kind of story. I liked the way it drew on tropes of fairy tales and folklore mixed with historical fiction set in the Hollywood Golden Age without ever feeling like a "fairy tale," and without leaning too far into grimdark (which I feel like a lot of modern gritty fae fiction does, to the point of becoming slightly cringe, but that's just me). The sapphic desire was very beautiful to read. My favorite part was definitely the Greta storyline. The ending did feel a little abrupt to me, though.

Lovely adaptation, and the illustrations are so vibrant. I especially liked the concept art in the back pages.

I don't normally go for nonfiction, and it took me a long time to get through this, but the writing was clear and fantastic, and the topic made me re-evaluate the way I think about money on a personal and social level. So sad we lost the author in 2020.
press start to translate: This is what happens when you let a computer translate a video game? by Clyde Mandelin

Really fascinating; I wish Mandelin went into the nitty gritty of his models a little bit more (as a DH scholar) but that's just me. The translation jokes got a bit tired after several pages of them, but the talk about the history of localizations and machine translations was good.
Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: And Other Questions about Dead Bodies by Caitlin Doughty

Funny, informative, honest, and cheerfully morbid. Loved it as much as the author's Youtube channel.

Spoilers, but I was vibing pretty well until the Big Bad showed up in the last 3 pages to loudly announce his evil plan and his motivations, including a character that could have been a mystery but instead was immediately identified as one of the wolves who showed up earlier. Why couldn't you let me guess? Why couldn't you reveal this stuff more organically in the next book? You don't trust my intelligence, Mr. Klune? Come on.
