Found this one a little hard to get through. The content wasn’t quite what I was expecting based on the description and marketing — I thought it would dive deep into all of the weird irrational magic-adjacent stuff that’s made a resurgence in popular belief and try to figure out why (astrology, witchcraft, UFOs, this is a rich topic), but the book is a list of well-known cognitive biases with a lot of anecdotal sidebars. I was excited for this after loving Cultish and kinda liking Wordslut, and am disappointed that I didn’t really learn anything new here.
Stunning on every level. Dimensional, lovable characters, a unique take on the meaning of death and dying, tragic and redemptive in equal share. I miss the world of this book and look forward to reading it again one day.
Didn’t really get the hype around this one and I love weird girl no plot books (also didn’t find it that weird). I enjoyed the narrative style as a creative choice but found it hard to get invested in a world with essentially no characters.
This book could’ve used a few more looks by an editor at the sentence level and Margot is such a non-character that I sometimes forgot about her, but I was pleasantly surprised at how the mystery moved the plot forward once some of the pieces started to fall into place. Creepy quick read thriller that does get your adrenaline pumping at some points.
