Tiny Moons: A Year of Eating in Shanghai by Nina Mingya Powles
4.0
Nina captures the essence of Shanghai's cuisine and the experience of finding belonging as a multicultural immigrant in these beautiful beautiful essays that make you nostalgic for a home you've never had. So lyrical you can almost taste and smell the Asian delicacies with every page flip—I'm hungry for more bite sized books that I can be pretentious about~
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
5.0
We need more YA fantasy that doesn't just focus on the romance subplot, and The Raven Boys DELIVERS. The found family gives me slight Six of Crows Nostalgia, the way the prophecy is sprinkled throughout the book — the vibes the vibes there's SO much happening and I live for intricate plots like these.
also Chainsaw supremacy folks, we need more birbs in books!!

And the plot....darkens
Yes I'm sobbing over a book about ghosts. Yes I recommend books that make me cry to everyone who's willing to listen.
What better setting to conclude a spooky trilogy than New Orleans? Love the banter between Lara, Cass and Jacob to pieces. We need more stories about friendship 🥹🫶🏻
Alsoo this series yeeted me out of a reading slump— so if you are looking for something immersive and spooky that's easy to get into, the Cassidy Blake trilogy is for you :)

Tunnel of Bones by V.E. Schwab

Summerween much??
We're in the catacombs of Paris for this one! I think book 1 will forever be my favourite in this series, the Raven in Red has set the bar quite high <3 Loved to see more of the "unhappy cat" Grim!
The book covers a lot of backstory and preserves the gritty and spooky vibes from book #1. I love bones and poltergeists so it ended up fitting right up my alley heh ✨

City of Ghosts by V.E. Schwab
4.0
A spooky middle grade set in Scotland? When I think of Edinburgh I've never attribute the phrase "City of Ghosts" to the city— but now I'll certainly be looking for ghosts when I get to visit.
V. E. Schwab's writing is as immersive and atmospheric as can be. The plot was slightly predictable but that comes with the genre so no complaints there! Also loved the friendship been Cass and Jacob— more human and ghost friendships in literature please (yes Jacob we know you prefer the phrase corporeally challenged but shush)
Love how the story focuses on themes of friendship, trust and death. The Raven in Red, the child-soul-stealing villain would have absolutely terrified me if I read this book as a middle grader. Also, living for the South Asian side character Lara — (she did get on my nerves a lot during book 1 but I end up loving her more over the course of the next books sooooo more on her later)
The Harry Potter references did annoy me but I attribute that to my annoyance of anything jkr being mentioned in books (to be fair though, there were too many of them in general) 😭✋🏻

cute cute cute— here for the rep AND the DOGGOOOOOO but screeching over the fact that the dog's called Dog in Japanese because the MC has Japanese heritage um INU is a cute name but why'd u name a doggo DOG T-T
loved the heartwarming depth and development the main four characters have, however some important moments that could've been used to build some tension felt slightly rushed :/
also the chapter header illustrations are the cutest <3
(Received an ARC from the author!)

All I know is that I'll let Kenji shatter, unravel and destroy me. IF GIVE MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY WHY NOT MAIN CHARACTER HUH TELL ME TAHEREH
So glad that things finally pick up a little in this one, but a lot still doesn't seem to be happening? I feel like this trilogy could be condensed into one book~
Lesser drowning in blue ocean-deep plastic disco aquamarine algaecide rollercoaster orbs (that's how little sense Juliette's descriptions of Adam's eyes make but I suppose we all should've been warned by the cover)
