Why We Meditate: The Science and Practice of Clarity and Compassion by Daniel Goleman, Tsoknyi Rinpoche

hopeful informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

5.0

The chapters of the book contain an understanding of how we tend to think or feel or act written in simple language with good examples. There follows one of more practices relating to this. And then comes more on the science/studies that pertain. The chapters then build on one another with a final short chapter summarizing.

The teaching is very practical and the teacher gives me the feeling that he, too, has had the difficulties we confront when we meditate. So often he says "this is natural" when speaking about one of these difficulties. He even shows how difficulties can show that we are doing fine as well as simple ways to work with them. He's encouraging and gives a sense of being right there in it with the reader.

This seems to possibly be the best book on meditation I've read. I say "possibly" because I haven't yet done the practices long enough to know much and also because it may be that this book seems excellent because it brings together so much of what I've read and practiced in the past. So, time will tell. I got the book from the library, so now I'll need to buy it in order to have it long enough to really use. The practices are simple to do, but I'll need to go through the book slowly learning them one by one. I'm sure it will be helpful to read over each section fully, practice for a week or more, and then move on to the next section.
