I read a review from some dude going on about the spider aliens and how they're morphologically impossible, then goes on to write that he has the sense to make his big spider aquatic. Ooh, aquatic. I can guarantee that, unlike Huff, that reviewer has never made anyone laugh. I listen to audiobooks in bed, and there I was finishing this up last night, laughing out loud in the dark. Suffice it to say I have book 3 lined up and I expect to read this all the way through the Peacekeepers books. The story is interesting, Staff Sergeant Kerr is absolutely amazing and this is just some good old fashioned military sci fi.

I enjoyed this, though I must caution that it follows the same "formula" as the first volume. Torin Kerr is assigned to a mission that doesn't seem like it's supposed to be dangerous, but she and her team end up getting mixed up in something hinky, and she has to try to keep everyone alive while balancing annoying political concerns. This book seems to set up an overarching plot for the series by introducing unknown aliens.

Even if some might think she's bland, I love the character of Torin Kerr. She's hella competent with a cheeky sense of humor, but she's humble, and her superpower is that her high expectations make people want to fulfill their own potential.

The main character has so much strong energy. This series is lots of fun.

When a Salvager finds a giant yellow space ship, the Confederation rushes to investigate. But so do the Others, the Confederation's main enemy. And the damn ship? It's got a mind of its own and it doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

Enjoyable military sci fi with great characterization and a plot that keeps surprising.

The second part of the Confederation series has our intrepid hero Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr sent off on a secret mission as revenge by the general she insulted and nearly killed in the last book. Tasked with learning the secrets of a mysterious alien ship, she has to contend with an annoying glory hogging commanding officer, an annoying group of scientists, an annoying reporter and an annoying civilian, who's only there because he found the ship. On top of that their enemies, the Others, have also found the ship and have soldiers on board. Oh, and the ship appears to be alive and is either testing them, or just trying to get them all killed...


This book has the same high octane action and heroics as the last one, and to a certain extent suffers from the same problems. Having just about learned who Sergeant Kerr's squad were by the end, we find that she is going on this mission with a completely different squad that we then have to learn about. At least we don't have to learn about the scientists as well, because

they nearly all get killed early on when part of the ship explodes

. We maybe get to see a little chink in Sergeant Kerr's armour as she engages in a verbal sniping match with the civilian salvage contractor, and you just know it's going to lead to more.

The sentient ship testing them (to find out what, we never know)is a fairly obvious Science Fiction trope, but it's done well enough to make it interesting here. It's not done to the awe inspiring levels of a Rama or Ringworld, because this is still a military story at heart, so that part gets sidelined when they run into the enemy. I did feel like I was in a Tomb Raider game at times, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. There is a very well done rescue at the end, and there is quite a lot of side story focussing on the pilots who are trying to protect the marines as well.

The dirty politics that the general has to engage in also rears it's ugly head, and there may just be more negative consequences as a result of Sergeant Kerr's actions in this book. It will be intersting to see where the author takes this next.

Militärisch, zackig, präzise und direkt. So ging es los und der Stil begleitete mich bis zum Ende. Zwar landet Sci-Fi mit militärischem Hintergrund seltener auf meinem Lesestapel, aber ich mag die Vielfalt.

Obwohl "Die Klügere gibt nach" aus der Reihe "Die Abenteuer von Torin Kerr" von Tanya Huff schon Band 2 ist, machte mich der Klappentext absolut neugierig auf die Geschichte und Protagonistin. Der Einstieg gelang mir, trotz fehlendem Vorwissen aus Band 1, gut und ich mochte Staff Seargant Torin Kerr auf Anhieb. Smart, loyal, pflichtbewusst und alles andere als in ihrem Job unfähig (ohne dabei überheblich oder perfekt zu sein) wäre die Kurzbeschreibung ihrer Person, die mich mit ihrer Wortgewandtheit wahrlich oft schmunzeln oder sogar lachen ließ.

Ich brauchte ein wenig, bis ich mich so richtig in das Umfeld und auf die verschiedenen Aliens einlassen konnte. Ich vermute, dass die Beschreibungen in Band 1 etwas ausführlicher waren und sich die Autorin hier auf das Wesentliche beschränkte, was für eine Fortsetzung absolut in Ordnung und gerechtfertigt ist. Letztendlich kam ich gut zurecht und es dauerte nicht lange, bis mir die wichtigsten Charaktere und Nebencharaktere geläufig waren.

Es traf sich gut, dass Torin ihre neue Truppe für die anstehende Mission ebenso wie ich erst mal kennenlernen musste, sodass der Anfang, im Vergleich zur eigentlichen Mission, eher gemütlich zum Beschnuppern ablief. Natürlich lief nicht alles glatt und es galt, sich trotzdem professionell auf die Mission vorzubereiten. Neben den ganzen Militärs mit all ihren unterschiedlichen Eigenheiten mischen zudem einige Zivilisten mit, die genauso erwünscht und hilfreich waren wie Querschläger bei einem Schusswechsel - für LeserInnen die Geschichte jedoch abwechslungsreicher und spaßiger machten.

Ich habe keine Ahnung, ob bei den Marines und vor allem an der Front so gelungene Sprüche geklopft werden. Neben der Action, Spannung, überraschenden Wendungen und Ereignissen waren diese definitiv die passende Ergänzung. Die Geschichte schritt flott voran, bekam zwischendurch trotzdem ein paar Atempausen, die durchaus auch mal recht emotional waren und die Gefechte (egal ob am "Boden" oder im Weltraum) wurden nicht beschönigt. Mit der Zeit konnte ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen und wollte unbedingt wissen, wie es weiter geht. Die Spannung und Abwechslung kam für mich absolut nicht zu kurz.

Nach diesem unerwarteten Lesevergnügen werde ich Band 1 in absehbarer Zeit auf jeden Fall in Angriff nehmen und ich hoffe sehr, dass auch die restlichen Bände der Confederation-Reihe übersetzt werden. Denn ich möchte auf jeden Fall wissen, wie es mit Torin weiter geht.
