I still love these books. Huff's Torin is so delightful. And I love the hints that this book drops for the stories yet to come.

I'm going to be able to use this for Reddit fantasy bingo for the Big Dumb Object square. I think overall, BDO is not my favorite plot device even though it's a classic one. That said, The Better Part of Valor had a really intriguing plot and I hadn't guessed all the twists before the end of the book, which. I enjoyed. I'm not sure I like a new character, and I suspect he may stick around.

I left reading SF thanks to the military Sf and this was a little militariatic but more about the characters than the flogging. Sadly when i got it from the library sale i didn't know it was book2. I like Tanya Huff so I read it. Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr told off a general and is now on a mission with a stupid attention seeking captain of a race new to the alliances they’re trying to promote. It should be easy help salvage captain Ryder brings in a strange yellow ship but it’s an unknown ship not from any known race. So Torin, or Staff as she’s usually called leads a new to her team of Marines along with the crappy captain and a team of scientists to check it out so Ryder can have it. Needless to say it goes wrong and their enemy shows up to boot leaving them stranded on an organic ship that can read their minds with the enemy there too.
I liked Torin, excellent strong female without being a bitch. But the story is slow to start, almost 150 pg before they get to the ship and stuff happens and nearly another 100 before the enemy appears. It’s a bit slow and the scenes could be very short as they bounced around the multiple povs.
Outside of Torin and Ryder, the other characters aren’t as well drawn as they could have been and there are many of them. The di’Taykan with their sex pheromones was the most memorable part. Over all, not my favorite Tanya Huff but it was still pretty good.

I love the sass and politics in these. Feels vaguely precursor to Murderbot

Another action-filled story about Staff Sargent Torin Kerr on a mission she's ordered on by her favourite General. She's with a different bunch of Marines on this mission, which is to provide some protection for a bunch of scientists who will investigate a strange, apparently abandoned ship.
Things go wrong almost as soon as everyone steps on board the ship, and it's up to the Marines, and in particular Torin, to get the scientists off the ship to safety.
This story, like the first in the series, is light and fast-paced, and again Torin must manage both her officers and civilians, while dealing with an evolving and devolving situation. I found the Marines and most of the civilians to be more or less background colour to Torin, the star captain heading the mission, and a salvage operator. Torin is competent, and cares about her squad and works really hard to bring everyone on the mission back home. No matter how irritating they might be! : )

Много малко екшън и отговори и много диалози има в тая книга.

I enjoyed this sequel, especially where it picked up! I was a little sad to not spend more time with the crew from Valor's Choice but hope the author picks up with them again in the next novel.

More fun with the space marines--Staff Sergeant Kerr and company are tasked (while dragging along a reporter, civilian scientists and a salvage pirate) to investigate a mysterious ship drifting in dead space. Quickly, the enemy "others" show up and the battlefield is a maze of steel hallways and dead ends. Huff does extremely well with the mechanics and dynamics of military organizations, capturing dialogue that, barring beam weapons, could have been said anywhere dirt naps have been taken for a thousand years, although as a Canadian, there is a distinct flavor of free press and social democracy, too.

I really enjoyed this book! More than the first, but that's not saying much. I personally prefer sci-fi set on space ships or stations and I really like this one. It could've felt like reading an Alien ripoff or a video game (which I would've also enjoyed), but it was it's own thing.
I love Big Yellow and I really hope we learn about what it was up to, but I also love the mystery.
Also this series is 2/2 for killing off my favorite characters
Read Infinity and Beyond: Space Station - Read about a found family
I feel like I have to explain this one. It's not so much a found family in the usual way, but because they're military everyone was able to work well together and get along because they have the same training
