The Better Part of Valor by Tanya Huff

4.0

Another action-filled story about Staff Sargent Torin Kerr on a mission she's ordered on by her favourite General. She's with a different bunch of Marines on this mission, which is to provide some protection for a bunch of scientists who will investigate a strange, apparently abandoned ship.
Things go wrong almost as soon as everyone steps on board the ship, and it's up to the Marines, and in particular Torin, to get the scientists off the ship to safety.
This story, like the first in the series, is light and fast-paced, and again Torin must manage both her officers and civilians, while dealing with an evolving and devolving situation. I found the Marines and most of the civilians to be more or less background colour to Torin, the star captain heading the mission, and a salvage operator. Torin is competent, and cares about her squad and works really hard to bring everyone on the mission back home. No matter how irritating they might be! : )
