This was less believable to me.

I really enjoyed this. Which is surprising. A few years back, on the recommendation of friends and blurbs comparing Lee Child with other authors I like, I picked up the second Jack Reacher novel Die Trying and I hated it. I didn't like the plot, I didn't like the writing and I hated Reacher. Half way through, with Reacher trapped in a barn, captured by a group of survivalists. I shut the book and decided that the baddies had got him. Shot him in the head. Jack Reacher was dead.

Not sure why I decided to give Child and Reacher another go. Perhaps because I had planned to read some crime series that I had neglected - Spenser, Robicheaux, Travis McGee. I picked one at random. I read it pretty quickly. And I enjoyed it. It is nonsense. There is no characterisation. Reacher has a clock in his head. He can guess pin numbers. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of pretty much everything....

But it was fun. I will try another. Perhaps a first person one. Probably with short sentences.

I started it thinking I would be able to get into the story but I just couldn’t I ended up not finishing the book would definitely not recommend

My least favorite Reacher book so far. Probably would rate 2.5 stars if I could though.

More preposterous goings-on in the life of Jack Reacher. These books are guilty pleasures, and nice quick reads between more literary pursuits. In this one, Reacher is traveling from Maine to San Diego, just for the hell of it, because he's a free spirit. On his route, he hits a small Colorado town called Despair, where he is given the bum's rush (literally). Reacher does not like this. He is driven back to the neighboring town of Hope by the local authorities. Reacher really hates backtracking. After drinking a few pots of coffee and catching the eye of Vaughan, the attractive law enforcement officer in Hope, Reacher is determined to find out why the folks of Despair are so anti-social. What actually is going on in that enormous metal recycling plant anyway? The ensuing plot is pure Hollywood and mostly ridiculous. Not my favorite of the series, but still a fun read.

I feel like every time I REALLY enjoy a Jack Reacher novel, the next one in the series woefully disappoints me. the last book in the series, Bad Luck and Trouble, was everything I love in a Jack Reacher book. Nothing to Lose, by comparison, was everything I dislike. And yet I keep reading! Phooey.
