Back to the core characters and not so many new characters made this better than the last two books. Though I love all the books this one was closer to the start of the series and what made me fall in love with this series :)
Absolutely reccommended

It's taking way too long for me to get through this amazing series. I've been getting through these about one a year, but with that ending, I may have to get to the next one that much sooner.

I found this book to be one of the less appealing of the series so far. BUT..... even though it can be rather repetitive Terry Goodkind's writing is still fluid and engrossing. He continues to pull political, and philosophical values into his novels and I always find his books and insight fascinating.

I am just breezing through these! This is a beautiful story about how truth doesn't change no matter how many people don't believe it. It was gut-wrenching to experience Richard's loneliness and the impending sense of doom that he couldn't shirk. Magnificent beginning of the end of the series. Which I am not looking forward to getting to.

For 500 pages:
Richard: WHERE'S KAHLAN???
Everyone Else: New Spell. Who Dis?
And there's a beasty so he can't use magic. That's it.
The low rating is due to seeing multiple people find out the same thing, the same way, that we already knew from page like ten: Kahlan has been erased. (Skip to Kahlan's chapter: 56 out of the 66.) Also Nicci's lowkey-in-love-with-Richard characterization in this book was disappointing for me since I loved her whole Death's Mistress role, but I am glad we got to see more of her.
Besides those things, the last 200 pages actually were worth my time. We're coming full circle to the series it feels like. I was just so bored with 2/3rds of the book, and if I hate reading something, automatic one star. Bonus star for the last bit I suppose. Hopefully Kahlan will be more prominent in the next book.

Goodkind, why must you always trap me with your books? Hundreds of boring, over-explained, over-described pages where I actually skip almost a whole chapter because all it is is Zedd walking through the Keep (for realz), and it's all I can do not to put it down because I do desperately want to know what's going to happen, and then about a hundred pages of a super exciting, riveting climax that propels me into the next book because I HAVE to know what happens, and then it's the same thing all over again.
Every time, dammit.
Every time, dammit.

Richard, throughout this entire book: "whERE'S MY WIFE?!?!?!?!"
Same, though. On my list of 'offences over which I shall dig up Terry Goodkind and yell at his corpse', having only ONE Kahlan chapter in an entire book surely belongs at the top.

Another book of Richard's right, everyone else is wrong, and rescue the feeble woman! The storyline is getting old. Then the story ends almost in mid sentence... Ugh! Interesting change in drama, though.

Its been a while since I read this series, but I was able to pick right back up where I left off. Kahlen has been whipped from existence and the only person who remembers her is good old Richard. The story was a little drawn out, but there were a lot of really interesting pieces that wove an interesting story. Can't wait to read the next book. I hope it doesn't take me as long to get to it this time.

Wow, OK, the worst thing that I think off hand that I can say about this one, much to my own chagrin is the writing style, honestly Chainfire was pretty good. It wasn't perfect and it wasn't as good as Wizards First Rule.
The reality is Chainfire is the first of what is going to become the first of a set of sub-trilogies that will compose the ending of this massive epic fantasy. Richard has finally woken up from his near fatal injuries to find that his wife Kahlan is missing once again. Strangly though, nobody even remembers that she even exits except him. Nicci and Cara think his “wife” is from a dream he had when he was feverish for those two days, while recovering from his injuries. Cara and Nicci think that he is delusional and their beliefs are only strengthened every time someone who knows Richard hears him talk about Kahlan and non of them remember her either.
To Richard this says that there is something bigger at play and that it has to be magic at play and it is large and complex and is going to have disastrous consequences somewhere if this issue isn't solved.
Richards main arc is to deal with this emotional fallout and its not a fun one for obvious reasons. There are some interesting sub-plots involving Jagang trying to re-conquer Altur'Rang as a lesson, so the Old World will fall back in line and back under his book. There are blank chunks because of this “spell” that no one has a memory of and this is another issue. On top of that, a beast is created and sent out by Jangang is not hunting Richard and it causes some huge and massive collateral damage.
Now that we have the series back on track and we are seeing the same character's with each book again and we have some stability in characters and while Cara and Nicci are frustrating when they are harping on Richard to give up on this “Kahlan” person that they don't remember and get on with solving the problems that they are facing. Nicci and Cara are supportive and sweet at times and I wish they had been given more of those moments vs. harping and getting on Richard. They would have gotten so much further so much faster.
I really want to finish this series and I can say that it does end and while you are going to see this all post in one or two day, this is a week of typing and I am going to be so happy to see the end of this typing. But, I do cherish the happy memories that I have of this series that I am reliving through these reviews. Not only of the books but of the things that went on in my life, the important things that happened through each read.
