I can put up with a lot of horrific and nasty things in books and movies, but I can't handle outright animal cruelty for the sake of cruelty. I couldn't even make it all the way through the horrible kitten torture/murder scene.

The writing was actually good and I was intrigued by another Lord of the Flies type spin, but I can't get through the kitten torture, and if that sets the stage for the rest of the book I don't want anything to do with it.
