The book began well. I am not familiar with quantum mechanics, but was able to understand the early chapters quite well. Unfortunately I lost the thread around chapter 7. Shame.

Questo libro è stato una lettura obbligatoria per un corso in università. Molto interessante e a tratti divertente.

Carlo Rovelli is my favourite theoretical physicist. In Reality Is Not What It Seems, he sets out to explain quantum gravity to lay people. He writes eloquently. If I don’t understand, it is because the subject is beyond me. Part 1 (Roots) and Part 2 (The Beginning of the Revolution) are relatively comprehensible. The real meat is Part 3 Quantum Space And Relational Time, and it gets lost in me. But I get a rough idea of what quantum gravity is: the unification of General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Loop Theory is one of the solutions of quantum gravity (another contender is String Theory).

It is fun to read the anecdotes of physicists and discoveries in theoretical physics. Part 4 Beyond Space And Time has some mind-blowing ideas (Chapter 12 Information). The last chapter, Chapter 13 Mystery, is philosophical.

5/5 an exciting read, really good book for anyone that has even a slight interest in physics. I don’t usually read popsci but coming from a background of physics, I had a really good time. Half of this book builds on the most important discoveries of physics from antiquity to the present problem with GR and QM. I enjoy reading about them in context and the efforts taken to make the concepts easily understandable.

The rest of the book introduces loop quantum gravity well. It is written by a quantum gravity phycist after all. I wish there was more of a discussion on the other theories, or how LQG is incomplete.

Another banger from my boy Carlo.

I haven't taken a physics class since high school, but it is such a pleasure to be taken on journeys through the history of scientific discovery and to be invited to try on different lenses of the true nature of reality.

no matter how much you can get yourself to understand the book, i have to admit that the content is so well arranged.

even though you can only remember 30% (in detail) after finishing it, it's still worth reading

The theory describes a colourful and amazing world where universes explode, space collapses into bottomless holes, time sags and slows near a planet, and the unbounded extensions of interstellar space ripple and sway like the surface of the sea

I learned almost nothing from this book. Most likely a skill issue....also the beginning was too much about Guys Doing Physics instead of the physics itself. Yuck I hate guys!!! Plus the author completely glossed over India and Arab empires' contribution to math and science by claiming that they basically just kept Greek theories safe in a little box somewhere while Europe descended into Christian feudalism. Like idk that much about India and Arab empires but I'm pretty sure they invented algebra and geometry....the languages physics uses to make sense of itself. So if you're gonna spend half a book recounting the greatest minds in science then ignore India and the Arab world's contributions then I'm questioning everything else
