A fun and funny parody of Peacock's well-known literary circle.

Comedy can date quickly, and satire quickest of all, but this book is still laugh out loud funny two hundred years after it was written. A sly, good natured swipe at the pretensions of the writers friends and contemporaries, and of Romanticism, it is very much worth a read.

These types of approaches to written debate really find their origins of sorts in Nightmare Abbey. Truth be told, there are countless others that could come to mind before and after. As in, for example, Lewis' "The Abolition of Man," there is a way of conversing with your opponent skillful without him ever being present for the conversation himself. Peacock does this with several great minds modern to his own, and weaves a tale between the whole party. The writing is good, the story is nice, but some parts were a slog to get through.

I have two degrees in literature that specialise in Romanticism, but I still only understood maybe 2/3 of the references in this max, so definitely worth reading an annotated copy (and having google translate handy, if your Latin isn't up to snuff...)

Genuinely funny, charming, and rattled along surprisingly quickly. Lots of hijinks.

I originally picked up this book because I liked the cover (my copy is different than the one displayed here) and I thought the name was amusing. I had to look on Wikipedia to found out what it was about, but deciding that I liked the idea of a satire on gothic romance novels, I bought it. I was not disappointed. Thomas Love Peacock does a skilled job at blending the tropes of those novels into characters, situations, and ideas that satirize novels like Wuthering Heights. Although, I can't help but think I would have gotten more out of it had I read this in my British Literature II class which is why I give it 3 stars.
