What a wild ride. I absolutely laughed out loud several times. If you've ever had an opinion about novels of manners or Gothic novels circa the regency/Byronic era, this is your jam.

I was going to rate this a 1 star but the final section of Chapter XII (with the ghost terror and "mermaid" catch) was so funny to me that it by itself gets a star. The final 10 pages or so were closer to a 4, but that can't make up for how insufferable everyone was before.

3.5/5. This satire rips into all the romantic poets we know and love. Though it was a bit dry at times, I got a good chuckle out of it.

Voi mikä goottisen rom-kauhun satiiri ja oman ajan taidepuheen, esoterismin/trassendentaalifilosofian ja yläluokkaisen joutilaisuuden hyväntuulinen ivailu! Painajaisluostarin vesa Scythrop (kr. ”synkkäilijä”) ihastuminen kahteen hyvin erilaiseen naiseen on yksi juonentynkä, mutta iso osa kirjaa on keskusteluja enemmän ja vähemmän outré (out there) -tyyppien välillä, jotka vieraina Painajaisluostarissa. Tyyppien esikuvat mm. Lord Byron ja Coleridge. Välillä raskassoutuinen ja välillä hilpeätuulinen lukukokemus.

Numerous passages of sublime hilarity; very little ties them together, however.

I loved this - it was funny, with a story line I found more engrossing than most serious Gothic books.
