The Long War brings some more action and excitement to the series. It seems to have a broader, more diverse scope, without the disparate feel of the first book. There’s still no unified storyline in this book itself, and the individual storylines sort of peter out in the end, but there’s a sense of building toward some significance across the series as a whole.

To much politics and hate in this book for me...there is enough in the real world. Couldn’t finish this one. Might be a good book, but timing of when I started reading this just wasn’t good for me.

Just did not have the excitement of the first. Too many different stories at once with too many bland characters. I'll continue on to the final book, but unfortunately this was a big disappointment.

The Long War is even better than the first book in the series in my opinion. Not many stories manage that, possibly because the shiny new ideas in first books tend to grab us. The Long Earth (#1) showed us a new setting and hinted at ideas. This book really put those ideas forward and started grappling with them.

The Long Earth series is a lot of fun, and it's particularly enjoyable to see Pratchett and Baxter's imaginations running a bit wild. The Long War is a worthy successor to the Long Earth, although War is a slightly misnomer - the name (and the cover) evoke an idea of massive airships carpet-bombing stepwise Earths, but in reality it's more a war of ideas than of people.
That said, it's still quite a fun book, and I am very much looking forward to the next one in the series.
