in love with charles burns’s illustrative style. the blending of fantasy and reality, past and present, create a tangled, engaging mystery about trauma, guilt, and memory.
Graphic: Self harm
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Abortion

A masterwork. While I think I do prefer Black Hole, the finesse, mastery and control over the comics page is really impressive. Burns shows off his talents as a cartoonist and story teller with this book.
The story is way more abstract and surreal than Black Hole which definitely has its moments, but I think it wraps up nicely. A lot of the metaphors and symbols throughout really make sense after finishing the story. I’m very curious on how this would improve the experience of a reread.

My second time reading the Last Look trilogy, this time in a single volume. Basically the story of a selfish, loser artist and his obsession and relationship with a fellow artist, and the ways in which he generally screws up his life, both through his own choices and an event that is beyond his control. Reading it for the second time, I picked up more on the connections between Nick's real life and the other surreal existence his character inhabits. Charles Burns's clean lined style is the kind of comic art I like best. The result is a very atmospheric story.

This is the only part I'll remember. The part where I wake up and don't know where I am.

this was brilliantly surreal and engaging - at least at the start
then, SPOILERS
it turns out that the character is just another fucking whingey harddoneto fucking self centered twat who might have managed to quit the drugs but hasn't managed to get over his one self pity and begin to think about other people.
the ending just spoils the whole thing, arrrrrgh fuck, I feel really let down.
5stars for the first two sections, x'ed out and the hive and no stars for sugar skulls.
grumble grumble.
I'll have to reread it as maybe I'm just being an arse.
EDIT THE DAY AFTER:
it's a 5 star graphic novel with a 1 star dick head of a main character. I'll give it 4 overall as 3 is too harsh just because the character is an entitled arsebat.

Burns's art is top notch, and I really liked how he played with styles here—a little tin Tin here, a little 60s romance comics there—but the book falls short in the story department. There's lots of potential. Burns created some interesting characters doing artsy things, and a bizarre dreamworld that perversely mirrors the actions of the protagonists. Those are just window dressing to the main story, which is presented as a mystery; some unspoken, horrible memory is trying to force its way back into the main character's mind. The big reveal at the end, though, lacks oomph. Yes, the situation presented totally sucks—but not enough to carry all the great and interesting things that happened before it. It makes the book feel a bit self-indulgent, like one of the "Oh, my life!" indie comics so popular in the early 2000s—the ones where a writer/artist described some personal experiences, ones that felt emotionally rich to them, but just seemed tedious to me. The whole book left me disappointed (aside from the art).
