After further reflection, I now think happy endings are overrated. Happiness was found in Lucy's story, and that in itself is enough for me. Lucy found her man!!! dead or alive
I throughly enjoyed.

Finally finished! I read this novel once before many years ago, but remembered little of it. This time through, I was frustrated, annoyed, surprised, and frustrated over and over again. And yet, in the end, Brontë won me over with her sharp, unflinching portrayal of a very complicated woman, Lucy Snowe.

The ending of this novel is delicious. Brontë stays true to her portrayal of Lucy and thumbs her nose at the Victorian romance plot (albeit at the eleventh hour!)

"Girl goes to foreign country, girl is sad." - actual quote from the friend who recommended this book to me.
Feels like a mood especially when you're the one in a foreign country inexplicably surrounded by sadness and melancholy sometimes.
Don't be like Lucy Snowe, kids.

I love me some Brontës, but this was very boring and way too Protestant.

Bronte's prose is as always ingeniously composed and controlled. I'm puzzled as to why people only read Jane Eyre and then never read another from Charlotte. I will say there are an abundance of long passages in French which may be an issue for many people, so I'd recommend having google translate at the ready if you need it. I found Villette to be a novel where it benefits from being read at a slower pace, I purposely slowed my reading down because I didn't want it to end. Also, I really liked Lucy - which seems to be an unpopular opinion? Read it.
