The problem with reading this series back-to-back is that some of the plot points seem very familiar. Are all small town law enforcement members corrupt? Is it necessary for Chet and Bernie to get separated for an extended period in every book? Maybe this format, a mystery told through a dog's eyes, is too limited for a lot of different plot points?

In any case it is still a good mystery and very entertaining.

This series is so fun and I'm enjoying the opportunity to read the two most recent installments (and an Iggy e-short!) while getting to know my new canine companion, especially because in this story Chet seemed prone to a particularly short attention span, just like my puppy. I've loved throughout this series how often I think, "That's just the thought process I imagine a dog goes through..."

#57 Book Read in 2012
The Dog Who Knew Too Much
by Spencer Quinn

This is the fourth book in the Chet and Bernie series. Chet is a dog who tells the story of helping his owner, Bernie, on their cases, as Bernie is a private investigator. In this book, Chet and Bernie are hired by a woman to find her missing son, who was at a wilderness camp and never returned for an overnight hike. Not a simple missing persons case, as the boy's father has a criminal bent and got involved in some shady dealings with people local to the camp. Chet and Bernie take a few shots along the way but continue to try to track down the boy.

This series is a fun one to read. The books are good mysteries. Chet and Bernie are great characters and have a nice connection. Secondary characters like Bernie's girlfriend Suzy are also well-developed. There is a lot of humor in these books, especially in Chet's telling of the story. I recommend this series.

I think this was the best in the series. I so love Chet the Jet and Bernie. I hope the author keeps writing books in this series.

I generally like this series, but I always cringe when Chet is in trouble :-(

Enjoyed the first few…love Chet’s POV. Seems like they are getting a little formulaic.

meh. I didn't hate the book but I didn't enjoy the writing style. Chet was repetitive and not in a cute way.

Disappointed in this one. it was like he took elements from his previous 3 novels and just rearranged them for this one. he phoned it in. i hope number 5 in the series is not like this. i mean i can understand a pattern forming and rehashing old ideas on say number 10 in a series (most authors do this) but not in number 4. book number 4 by an author should still have fresh ideas,if not they need to hang it up.

like previous books- bernie and chet are separated and basically kidnapped, a kid is held for ransom cuz the dad is a criminal that is being punished/pressured, and dirty law enforcement in a small town. like really Quinn? this is just lazy. i, of course, figured out what was going to happen every step of the way because i had already read it in the previous novels. but Chet as always was quite an entertaining narrator but the mystery and thriller aspect was zilch .
