It starts off as a kind of tongue-in-cheek critique on society’s injustices and plight of the poor by following the miserable life of sweet Oliver, but then kinda loses it midway. And then we get info-dumped on relations of people we don’t really know, but at least it means the good Christian Oliver gets a happy ending?

An orphan what has been done wrong by, suffers an uncommon amount, so as Mister Dickens can demonstrate the evils done by men.
Basically the same plot as THE LITTLE PRINCESS by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but more passive, moralistic, and wordy. I am a sucker for orphans, though, so I didn't hate it. Warning: racist and sexist. Avoid if Jewish, but you probably knew that.
I recommend Dodger by Terry Pratchett instead, which cuts out the drivel and prejudice, and gives the main character something to do besides "be moral." But do read this if you're into saintly orphans with a gothic feel.

I just couldn't any more. It's just too bleak for me to enjoy the experience of reading this one. I find myself getting more and more reluctant to pick it back up, so...
I have now stopped at a point where Oliver is safe and being taken care of and others are about to ruin that once again, so I'm quitting while it's still pleasant, ya know...

This is a great novel! Somehow has the capacity to surprise me, every time I re-read it.

read so long ago I can't even remember. Done so simply out of the push to read classics. Yet not all books are for everyone and I think I just wiped this one from my mind

Another wonderful book by Dickens. It is easy to see why it still remains popular
