Four for content, although tbh I enjoyed the unexpected anthropological bits more than the metabolic ones, and two for snarky tone.

Excellent, informative and entertaining review of human metabolism, our evolutionary origins, present day strengths and risks and looking to our future as a species.

Fantastic book that changed my outlook on food. Informative, covers a wide range of topics, sneaks in stories from fieldtrips, and occasionally funny. Easy to follow as well, even with little scientific baggage. Will try to keep its teachings in mind, and might give it a reread to refresh my memory when needed.

This book blew my mind in a lot of ways, and I wish I hadn't finished it on vacation so I could have come written a better review with it fresh in my mind! All i know is that in the last month since finishing it, I've recommended it to a half-dozen people IRL, not to mention all my social media feeds. I also recommend Pontzer's advisor Daniel Lieberman's new book which goes with it perfectly; "Exercised: Why Something We Never Evolved to Do Is Healthy and Rewarding." Both are must-reads if you're even passively interested in metabolism/exercise & anthropology! This totally re-wrote everything I thought I knew about metabolism!

I like the Science shared in this book, and I learned from what was shared; however, I felt like the book was much longer than it needed to be. The author's anecdotes about the tribe he studied were long-winded and couple have been trimmed down to allow the research to shine a bit more.

Interesting, especially the sections about metabolic constraint and those about the Hadza. The author has a habit of saying very interesting things and then following it with a dose of fatphobia. Apparently, obesity is as much as a threat to humanity as climate change?

This book gives comprehensive insight into how we humans burn energy and it's blown my mind. I've recommended it to friends and strangers.
