Lovely seaside holiday fairy story. Amber is a great character full of energy and personality. I love how her outfit is an such a lovely orange leotard, it fits so well with her flying antics of cartwheels and backflips! The authors definitely made an effort to give each fairy a slightly different feel and personality, it's not like some kids' books where it would just be like "Here's a generic fairy and here's another generic fairy." This makes it extra special when Ruby and Amber are reunited because you get to see their different personalities and how they interact with each other. Then they design and put together their temporary fairy house together with the help of Rachel, Kirsty and Bertram 😊

This one is slightly more boring than the first book. I feel like Ruby was a better developed character than Amber. However, the first sighting of the goblins was pretty exciting.

I used to read these when I was younger and really liked them, now I realise in every book the stories are exactly the same; Two girls meet a fairy in trouble, they try to save the fairy, the 'goblins' cause a problem, they eventually save the day. But they're okay if you're 6 :)

Okay, so I might be a little biased towards the Rainbow Fairies because it’s the first series and I’m just so emotionally attached to it because I remember reading this series (or at least the first five books because that’s what I owned) over and over again the summer before sixth grade and I just could never sick of it. I used to constantly flip through this series, and Scarlett the Garnet Fairy, before my mom boxed all my books up and left them on our balcony to rot. (I’m pretty sure she threw out my copies of Ruby and Fern’s books, because otherwise I would’ve re-read them this year too!) Needless to say, it’s been a while since I’ve re-read this series and there was definitely quite a bit that I forgot, but it was all very exciting for me!
Because I’ve been reading a lot of these later Rainbow Magic books, I forgot that Jack Frost and his goblins were genuinely menacing during this first series. Over time, everyone stopped taking them seriously, but they felt like an actual threat in this series - even Jack Frost’s poem was terrifying! I also loved this writing choice to have the environment get colder if the goblins happened to be nearby, it helped to make the tone of the book a little more tense and I wish they’d continued to use this. Also, that image of Jack Frost in the Magic Pond was an absolute jumpscare! (And I need to re-read Ruby’s book to confirm whether or not the girls have actually met the goblins because I could’ve sworn they did, the goblins never even made an actual appearance in the illustration apart from that shadow that looked like a rat.)
I completely forgot that this was also the book where they met Bertram for the first time! I remember the scene of him at the pot very clearly, I just forgot that it happened in this book. Also, Rachel has always been this sort of ‘act first, ask later’ type of person from the get-go, like, she really just saw this frog and grabbed him with no hesitation.
I would also like to add that I adore Bertram and wish that he would appear in more books. He’s like everyone’s comfort uncle and him leaping into the air to kick the ice in after the entrance to the pot had frozen over is pretty badass of him.
Okay, let me actually talk about Amber, who this book is about. She’s my best girl, I truly love Amber the most! She’s just so little sister coded to me; from her cartwheeling out of the shell and doing random somersaults midair to her endless barrage of questions, that is a little sister who’s used to yapping her heart away to infinitely patient big sister Ruby. I think she’s absolutely adorable, like, she wanted to bring the shell she was trapped in with her so she and her sisters could have a bed. (Also, she looked so precious sitting cross-legged on Kistry’s shoulder!)
I think the dynamic between the Rainbow Fairies will always be very special to me because of how they genuinely seemed like sisters. I know in all the other series, the fairies are all said to be sisters, but the Rainbow Fairies actually felt like sisters to me. I mean, I cried when Ruby and Amber reunited, and then seeing how Ruby really tried to make this little pot into a home for them and how Amber got all sad because their new clam-bed reminded her of their home in Fairyland - I know it’s for six-year-olds or whatever, but this is actually a very emotional series and I such a deep love for it.
Last thing I promise: “The Cloud Fairies” - WAS THIS THE ORIGINAL NAME FOR THE WEATHER FAIRIES?!

This book had no substance to it but had such a grip on me as a child that I have to round up in stars for the 6 year old that felt so much magic here. As an adult I can’t see whatever it was I used to see in this series and that, though unsurprising, saddens me a little.
