I'll admit that this still might have been a reasonable story in its own without Doyle's connection but once I understood the reality of this book, I am glad I delved no more than half a dozen pages into the book. Its the equivalent of Doyle putting his stamp on a real life circumstance that he felt needed proper attention but one that didn't require much of his time.

This was an absolute page turner of a book! A well written, smart, and engaging piece about far reaching corruption, anti-semitism and how Arthur Conan Doyle was so much more than “just” an author. This book is very fact based, without needless added fluff for the sake of dramatics. The facts are plenty dramatic on their own. Now, saying that, I would call this a well written book and enjoyable read. If you’re a history buff and literature nerd, plus you love a good mystery.. you will enjoy this book!

3.5 stars - this was a really interesting story. It was well researched and well written. I learned about ACD - I didn’t realize he solved real crimes as well as wrote crime fiction. It should have grabbed me more but something was missing. Would recommend though. The narration was great.

The historical events laid out in this book, which took up maybe half the book, were an interesting bit of the past that I hadn't know about before.
Unfortunately, the half of the book focused on historical context got sidetracked from a basic explanation of classism, racism and such, to an obsession with the flaws of the time period. I'm confident some of the ire is deserved, but there were definitely complaints that were overblown based on the facts given.

Graphic: Confinement and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Antisemitism, Murder, and Classism
Minor: Suicidal thoughts and War
