In the fall, I like to read a ghost story. I don't like novels where then supernatural turns up in the end, solving all problems with "but it wasn't human!" But a story like this, where the very title proclaims a haunting, is a fun occasional diversion and I enjoyed the old fashioned narrative.

This book reminds me of a mix between a Sherlock Holmes tale and the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series. Great reader for the audiobook!

This was a great gothic ghost story. And although I felt there were significant plot holes, I enjoyed it for what it was!

“We know not how we got here or where we will go after we leave. How can we be so convinced that there is no such thing as lost souls, half alive and half dead? How can you be so certain that it is a nonsense?”

This was a fun little ghost story and I really enjoyed the ending with the sister and everything coming full circle. That being said, I do think the book was slightly too long and some parts drawn out, but I thought the suspense was great and the ghostly encounters were very descriptive for maximum spook. I enjoyed it, although I wouldn't mind a ghost story with a male lead instead so we aren't blaming "a woman's disposition" for what is happening.

This was my least favorite book by him.
It was ok but nothing like his others.

This is more like 2.5 stars. It had the feeling of a gothic novel, which is a good thing, seeing as how it was set in the Victorian era. It reminded me a lot of "The Woman in Black." Giant manor with a dark history, a new person comes in to experience the creepiness.
It was fairly well written in a bit of a Dickensian style, though because it was a little more stilted, it wasn't nearly as suspenseful as it could have been. I never really had that fully unsettled feeling that you expect to get from a ghost story.
Overall, though, I was entertained more than I thought I would be. It was a quick and easy read.

The best ghost stories I've read in ages. My one critique would be the feminist overtones that were at odds with the 1876 setting of the story.

I really enjoyed this book. Great Victorian Gothic novel and haunted house story. Reminds me of James and the Brontes, and, sure, Dickens. The ending was somewhat predictable, given this novel was following a certain familiar formula. But it definitely was not unsatisfying.
