I like this Victorian story. The links to Dickens and the way it is written fits perfectly with the horror stories from that time period in my view. It is a bonus that the themes in this book are way more modern. The story is a bit predictable, but I loved it anyway.

Well done! This book gave me a few actual chills and jumps. Some of the supernatural scenes were a little overdone and long, but overall it was an enjoyable gothic ghost story with a good set of characters. It was refreshing to read a book that was not aiming directly for the man to save the woman and rescue her life with romance.

"I think any story which concerns itself with the afterlife and with forces that the human mind cannot truly understand risks disquiet for the reader."

Yes. This is what my mind does with every haunted house/ghost story I've ever read. Except this one. The set up is perfect, Dickensian prose, creepy setting, unsettling children and things that grab you in the dark night and wish you harm. Yet, I was never scared.

Gripping, very readable ghost story, evoking classic gothic tales from Jane Eyre to The Turn of the Screw.

this book tells the story of a young woman who leaves her home city of London to take up a nannying job for two children in the countryside. when she gets there, the children are the only obvious occupants of the house, and she has to investigate where their parents are and why most of their last seven nannies have ended up dead.

this book was okay! it was a fairly traditional, straight-forward horror trope of the new nanny in the countryside, the haunted house, the townspeople who know what happened in the house but don't want to tell her. i think it was fine; it didn't do anything new and it didn't really have any distinct scary moments that had me tucking my feet under a blankets, which it why it's getting three stars.

this would be good for someone who likes a more traditional scary story (that isn't too scary), ghosts, and that english countryside vibe.

Other Press gave me this book after I entered their giveaway and won.

I’m torn about This House is Haunted. On one hand, I enjoyed much of the prose and crafting of the story. On the other hand, I couldn’t help but find the plot mostly formulaic and predictable. And while Eliza’s numerous flaws were interesting, her narrow-mindedness prevented a more complex understanding of the characters around her. This plot-driven novel, while exciting at times, left me ultimately unsatisfied.

Thought that the main character would just bug me the whole way through but she really surprised me in the end and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great plot!

"This House is Haunted" is rather an uninspired title for an uninspired ghost story. It tried hard to live up to other Gothic horrors but fell short. I find the main character unbelievable and the dialogues forced. There are also too many clichés for my taste. I would give it 2 and a half stars.
