Okay so I'm a little mixed about the book but overall I enjoyed it. It's got a bunch of exciting stuff going on, like sneaking through a major city, a Prince-and-the-Pauper style subplot, and a fun, fairly exciting battle at the end. You can kind of see Lewis get better at things like that over the course of these books, really.
On the other hand, it was *really* hard to take the main character seriously with a name like "Shasta," to say nothing of his horse being "Bree," both of whom are supposed to be serious characters.
It almost goes without saying at this point, but there was a certain amount of useless scene-dressing in the female character, and some rather unfortunate racial coding with the nation of Calormene. But overall it was a fun story, and one of the better ones of the Chronicles.

TW: xenophobia, racism against southwest asians, misogyny, descriptions of physical abuse (including child abuse), slavery, and fatphobia
first and foremost, as a disclaimer, yes I realize that Lewis' works are a product of his time and he is very highly acclaimed as a christian author. however, that does not refute the fact that his biases were wrong then and are wrong now.
this book is practically unreadable; on every page there is a new depiction to stomach, whether it be his disparaging descriptions of southwest asians as savages, uncouth, uncivilized, and ugly (specifically because they are brown), or his unrepentant commitment to the misogynist assumption that there are two kinds of women: those who are feminine and silly and giggly and only like feminine things, and those who are strong and brave and are "as good as a man, or at any rate as good as a boy."
i read this book many times as a kid, and it was one of my favorites because i really liked shasta and aravis. however, now I can see the pitfalls of Lewis' writing, and the way he elevates his chosen characters at the expense of everyone else. it's cheap writing at best and harmful at worst. and yes, it is harmful. i cannot imagine the scope of shame and confusion this has brought to kids who saw themselves in the depictions of the calormenes, and it angers me that C.S. Lewis' flagrant racism is still dismissed in discussions around his works today.

Wow it breaks my heart to say this but Horse and His Boy is shockingly racist and Islamophobic. The problematic depictions of the "evil" Calormenes and the just, "fair" (code: white) Narnians had me side-eying through my entire reread. Just a strong nope. It's a shame, because the skeleton of the story itself is thrilling. I used to love this book as a kid.

Like with the first two books, there are some great moments that deliver a payoff. But on the whole, I don't think C.S. Lewis is a good writer. Reading his words aloud even brings this more to light. It can be choppy and confusing. I did like the beginning and ending of this one, but the middle portions dragged and we almost gave up finishing. But we persevered and I am glad we did.
