Book 15 in the In Death series, PURITY IN DEATH by J. D. Robb, is another stellar murder mystery. Better yet, we see several relationships evolve and get to ponder several morality questions that cause tension between Roarke and Eve.
I'm always impressed by how well Ms. Robb balances developing her characters while progressing the story. In PURITY IN DEATH, she uses a mysterious group enacting vigilante justice to force Eve and Roarke to discuss deeply held beliefs that oppose one another. Unlike in previous installments where the couple would argue and fume at the other's stubbornness, they show real emotional growth and relationship maturity. Sure, they still argue. They wouldn't be a couple if they didn't have arguments. Still, it was nice to see them come together to discuss their different viewpoints and to have them listen to each other.
Even better, we get to see both their reactions to Mavis' news, which seriously was the highlight of the entire story. In a novel that includes serious discussions of who gets to determine guilt and whether vigilante justice has any place in a lawful society, Eve and Roarke's reactions to Mavis' news provide a much-needed comic moment.
Ms. Robb and her In Death series continue to fascinate and entertain me. The crimes Eve must solve are always engaging and difficult to guess in advance. The growth of Eve and Roarke's relationship is just icing on the cake.

I found this book horribly sluggish. I know that this is a fantastic series and will continue to read on, there was just something about this one that was difficult for me to get into.

The one where a cyber terrorist creates a computer virus that overstimulates the brain, causing aggression and death. The purity comes from the fact they only target horrible people. Also McNab gets seriously injured after a cop investigating gets infected and goes homicidal.
“His heart stopped. During the transpo. They had to zap him. It was only a few seconds, but I thought: What’ll I do? What’ll I do? He’s such an asshole,” Peabody said and burst into tears.
On a personal note Mavis is pregnant.
Cautious, Eve slid her hand away, tucked it behind her back. Logically she knew pregnancy wasn’t contagious, but all the same.
Eve’s maternal instincts are hilarious. I read in an interview Nora Roberts said she wouldn’t write Eve and Roarke having a kid, but it would be comedic gold.
And here’s a Roarke and Eve quote for the road.
“What’re you doing?”
“Logging the entry. I better not see any of that green stuff or those baubles go into your pockets, Ace.”
“Now I’m offended.” He straightened, brushed at his shirt. “If I nipped anything, you can bet your ass you wouldn’t see me do it.”

This has to be one of my favorites.
I think I liked this one so much because you really got the futuristic vibes from the crimes.
Also McNabb and Peabody <3

This is #15 in the Eve Dallas/Roarke/Peabody In Death series. I’ve been reading this series pretty slowly because it’s great, but if you read them too close together, they get redundant. It does seem like she’s finally doing less repeating of the same things over and over. There comes a point when you’re in a series and if you don’t know it by now, you should just go back and start from an earlier book. Anyway. These are police procedurals in the near future and this one involves a puritanical vigilante group that has figured out a way to create a computer virus that infects people, which is very frightening and probably a possibility at some point in time. Eve is definitely continuing her journey of opening up to people. She is the main focus of this volume and the others are more background. 15 was great and I feel like I’m out of my In Death slump and ready to tackle #16 very soon!

While New York is experiencing a very hot summer, heat makes people lose their heads. Except that when a small dealer goes berserk, kills one of his neighbors before being killed in turn by some kind of virus in his own brain, Dallas conducts the investigation and discovers that a computer is far from being harmless but it's the people behind that are the most dangerous ...
A great investigation by Eve Dallas =) The author's style is as great as ever, the universe is AWESOME (I love the futuristic NYC, especially people's clothes =D), the plot is awesome (even if the thing with the computer looked a bit like a previous case ...) and I love the characters (I was sooo happy to see Trueheart, I think he will become a very good cop and I'm looking forward to see him evolving =)) !!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to read the next one =D
