I'd like to give this a 3.5. I loved the narration, the prose, the characters. The torture and misery of the prison was difficult, but helped me understand wartime Spain better. I loved the city, Barcelona, a city I love. My main hesitation is that it felt like a part of a series - like there was information I didn't know from books before and that the story was unfinished. But I liked it enough to be totally caught up and obsessed with listening to the rest of the series!

The Prisoner of Heaven is like a book within a book within a book. Zafón does an excellent job of tying his previous works; The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game together in this novel.

Fermín Romero de Torres has returned. And in this book, you learn about him - where he came from, how he is linked to David Martin (the character in The Angel's Game), and how him meeting Daniel was not by chance.

The Prisoner of Heaven is a little different from the books. Rather than piecing together the story and being the sleuth yourself, Fermin essentially tells Daniel all of the information you need to understand as a reader.

Others have noted the shortness of the book (and I will as well). It was only 275 pages. Zafón's other works were well into the 500s. I know that this book (how it ended and is set up) is most likely the 3rd of 4 (or 5 - PLEASE) books. There will be another book in this series. But how long will we have to wait?

This is definitely a book for fans of the series only. ALSO - I highly suggest re-reading The Angel's Game before you pick up this one.

I would recommend this to lover's of Zafón's work. It's my least favorite of the 3 out so far in this series but still, a great book.

Maybe because of the previous book, Shadow of the Winds, I sort of had high expectations for this work. The story was good, but then in some ways I felt it was an extension of the previous book. Interesting, but maybe I should have read this first.

El juego del ángel was a slog... This was not. Not as good as La sombra del viento, but it had the right feeling!
