A modern love story, tangled and complicated. I loved Nina’s prose, it was both descriptive and withholding, making the pages fly by.

This was a really beautiful book. It really tested my emotional stability. As a Sonoma County resident it was quite shocking to start reading a book that was set where you live, especially when it's the setting of so much trauma for the main character. But it made me want to keep an eye out for yerba buena. Also I hope that this book helped the author with their abandonment issues. Overall this was a really well written book that really made me feel for the characters and was full of emotion.

wow. this book is a tapestry. it is woven together with so many threads, delicately placed with loving understanding of how to craft this perfect story. I cannot begin to explain to you how I was so gripped by the entwined histories of these two people. Nina took such care to reveal them slowly, bit by bit, showing us exactly what we needed to see, when we needed to see it. at the end, she invites us to take a step back, see the full picture. to appreciate every precisely detail that lead to the beautiful, complete image before us.
I am thankful to have read this book. cannot wait to share it with others. I need to shout my praise from the highest rooftops and whisper it in quiet library corners.

can’t help but to compare this to the first book i’ve read by Nina LaCour, which was published nearly a decade before this one. can definitely tell the improvement both thematically and when it comes to the characters actually having depth to them.
though if i’m being honest i really don’t know what i feel about this book! it took me a long while to get into it, especially with how boring i thought Emilie’s story was compared to Sara’s but also how weird Sara’s story was at first, dare i say some of it was even unnecessary in my eyes but who am i to say! also due to the duel pov it took me quite a while to relate to both protagonists.
there are definitely intresting motifs in this story that I liked, ones of grief, loss and how each individual deals with them in a complete different way. but something in this book just wasn’t for me, unfortunately.
also i love cocktails i wish more of the book was cocktails talk but that’s just me

4.5? Tough review for me- I didn't love the plot of this, but I loved the characters so much! I especially loved seeing them in moments of happiness and growth. I almost never say this, but I want a sequel!
